Final Fantasy 14’s low-poly grapes still have a low polygon count following the Dawntrail update, thankfully

In conjunction with the new Dawntrail expansion that was recently released, Final Fantasy XIV received a new graphics update that made the now-14-year-old game’s graphics look more current. With this new graphics update, players wondered what would happen to the game’s infamous “low-poly” grapes. As reported by Game*Spark, it seems as though the fruits are here to stay.

“Low-poly” grapes are fruits that are commonly found in Labyrinthos – a location that was added in the Endwalker expansions. To reduce memory usage in the massive area, these grapes were created by affixing fruit textures onto crystal-shaped models, The grapes’ low polygon count made them stand out from the rest of Final Fantasy XIV’s graphical assets, which caused them to become something of a meme amongst the community. Low-poly grapes have appeared on official LINE stamps, merchandise, and numerous fan creations – so much so that the fruits have become something of a mascot for Final Fantasy XIV.

With the release of the Dawntrail expansion, the low-poly grapes have received a bit of an update. While the leaves surrounding the fruits have been improved and the fruits look a little bit shinier, the low-poly nature of the grapes remains unchanged. This is good news for Final Fantasy XIV purists as well as those who are big fans of the low-poly grapes.

Square Enix has announced that periodic graphics updates will be implemented to make Final Fantasy XIV look more modern. Hopefully, the Dawntrail graphics update indicates that the developers won’t be touching the low-poly grapes anytime soon.
