Persona 5 vocalist debunks beautiful story of how she was discovered

Misinformation about Lyn Inaizumi has been circulating on X this week, even coming to the attention of the singer herself. The subsequent exchange resulted in a surprisingly heartwarming outcome.

The soundtracks for Atlus’s RPG series Persona have included vocal tracks ever since Persona 3. The vocalist for the songs in Persona 5 (including 2019 revamp Persona 5 Royals and its 2022 remaster) is Japanese singer Lyn Inaizumi. Her extensive vocal range and fluent English in the main theme “Life Will Change” and the battle theme “Last Surprise” have endeared her to an audience of Persona fans worldwide.

This week, X user UntilPersona shared the following information about how the singer was discovered, however it turned out that this wasn’t true.

The story of Persona composer Shoji Meguro coming across Inaizumi in a jazz club makes for a stylish story that fits well into Persona 5. However, it wasn’t long before the vocalist herself addressed the rumor. In her post below, she joked that “It didn’t happen that way, but it’s beautiful so let’s just leave it at that.” Shoji Meguro responded humorously with “I’m also starting to feel like it did happen that way.”

Lyn will release her first solo album “johaLyn” on January 13. She decided to make good use of the buzz about her on X to promote her album, which resulted in the following friendly exchange between Lyn and user UntilPersona.

But where did the rumor about Lyn’s discovery come from? In Persona 5 Royal, the player can visit the Kichijoji Jazz Club, where the song “No more ifs,” sung by Lyn, is often heard playing in the background. The singer in the game sometimes performs this song live in the club. It seems that this has given rise to rumors that the dialogue and setting reflect real-life events.

So, how did Shoji Meguro and Lyn Inaizumi actually meet? In an interview with game music site 2083, Meguro revealed how Inaizumi was chosen for Persona 5. He said that he did not hold auditions, and instead asked around to find “a female singer who can sing soul in an authentic way.” It seems that Lyn was selected because her demo tape fitted the image so well. Although they did not meet at a jazz club, she was clearly chosen because her voice is perfect for the setting.

Persona 5 Royal is available on PS4. The remastered version is available on PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam/Microsoft Store). Lyn Inaizumi’s 1st album “johaLyn” is scheduled to release on January 13, and more information for overseas fans will be available soon.
