Japanese grandma racks up hours on the Nintendo Switch playing Suika Game

A Japanese gamer on X/Twitter recently spilled the beans on what happened when they lent their Nintendo Switch to their grandmother. Commenters were amused, curious and concerned about the result.

Over the course of 6 days, it seems that the user’s relative got hooked on playing Suika Game, clocking over 7 hours on Wednesday.

Post translation: The result of lending my Switch to my grandma.

Suika Game is a casual fruit-combining game similar to Tetris. Different types of fruit appear at random at the top of the screen. When two fruits of the same type hit each other, they evolve into successively larger fruits. Players must strategically drop the same types of fruit next to each other in the hopes of getting a chain reaction. The goal is to combine fruits to make the game’s largest fruit, watermelon (suika means watermelon in Japanese).

If the fruits reach the top of the screen, it’s game over. The game has a strong “one more go” pull, so it is easy to see how the user’s grandmother got into it.

In response to comments, the X user explained that their grandmother made a watermelon on her first day of playing. They added that she is rather tech savvy, as she found out about the game’s popularity on YouTube and wanted to try it.

Several commenters mentioned that their grandmother also enjoys Suika Game. Some users gently expressed concern for the health of the original poster’s grandma and shared stories of game-addicted older relatives.

Post translation: I remember my grandma getting addicted to Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Nintendo Switch) and being shocked when she realized that she had played for 300 hours.

On a heartwarming note, the original poster added that the experience of lending their Switch brought back memories of playing games with their grandmother when they were a child. Games can give us a new way to connect with people of different ages.
