Japanese developer Hexadrive announced their new multiplayer tower offense game VOIDCRISIS on July 21 (JST). The game is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on August 4 (JST).
VOIDCRISIS is a tower offense game that supports cooperative online multiplayer and is an original title from Hexadrive. The game takes place in the year 2222. Humanity is divided into 7 factions despite two galactic wars. Mankind then begins to construct an artificial battlefield called the battle territory to continue fighting. To carry out these battles, each faction sends pilots in bio-machines called VA (Vital Armor) to the battle territory with dimensional transmission. However, during the final experiment, a strange time-stopping phenomenon occurs on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. In order to fix the flow of time, players will take their Vital Armor into battle to get to the bottom of the VOIDCRISIS.
The game supports teams of up to 4 players in multiplayer mode. As the genre name tower offense implies, players cooperate to take on stages filled with turrets and waves of enemies. In addition to the large amounts of enemies barreling at players, the stages have a sense of elevation for players to use strategically. Players will need not only technique, but spatial awareness, strategy, and cooperation with teammates to survive the game’s difficult stages. Each match changes enemy routes, turret placement, and shot paths, so players can expect different map layouts each time they play.
On the graphics side of things, Hexadrive is using dynamic mechanical art shaders with the concept of bringing to life the CG boxart seen on robot plastic models. Through this, the game boasts having a sense of lavishness not found in other robot and mech games. The Steam page says players can create their own galleries that look like box art by taking screenshots of game highlights.
The role of the important Aegis character within the game will be voiced by famous voice actor Nana Mizuki, with science fiction author Yuuya Takashima in charge of the game’s setting. Hiroyuki Yamamoto, known as a character designer for games like Pokémon Café Mix and working on model kit box art, is the game’s art director.
VOIDCRISIS is scheduled to be in Early Access for 2 to 3 months and contains the core single player and multiplayer modes. For the full version, they plan on adding variation episodes for players to unlock by meeting certain conditions and an archive where players can look back at previously played episodes. The full version will also have a higher price than the Early Access version.
VOIDCRISIS is being made by the Osaka, Japan based Hexadrive, a company founded by former Capcom developer Masakazu Matsushita. The company is known for their core of skilled programmers and has an established reputation for their high-quality ports. They are also establishing themselves as a collection of skilled creators. The company has been involved in the remasters of hit titles like Okami HD and Zone of the Enders HD Edition and are also taking part in the development of Dragon Quest 12. So far, the company’s own titles have been focused on mobile, but now they are making their long-awaited PC debut with an original title.
