第21回Independent Games Festival Awards（以下、IGF Awards）の各部門ノミネート作品が発表された。事前に出品された作品の中から、業界関係者が優れたインディーゲームを部門別に選出するIGF Awards。今年の最多ノミネート作品は、『Papers, Please』で一躍有名となった個人開発者Lucas Pope氏の新作アドベンチャー『Return of the Obra Dinn』。革新性の高いゲームを選出するNuovo Awardと学生プロジェクトを対象としたBest Student Award以外の5部門でノミネートされている。こだわり抜かれたビジュアルやサウンドデザイン、独特のゲームシステムを用いたストーリーテリングが総合的に評価された形となる。
そのほか大賞に値するSeumas McNally Grand Prize候補としてノミネートされたのは、同じ1分間をループし続ける1-bitアドベンチャー『Minit』、錬金術をテーマに機械のオートメーションを図るパズルゲーム『Opus Magnum』、全てのドットを物理演算でシミュレートする2D探索アクション『Noita』、毒々しい1999年風のインターネット世界を巡回して違反サイトを取り締まる『Hypnospace Outlaw』、監視カメラをハッキングして人々の生活を盗み見たり干渉したりする監視シミュレーション『Do Not Feed the Monkeys』。未リリースのものを含め、いずれも独創的なアイデアが光る作品ばかりとなっている。そのうち『Noita』『Hypnospace Outlaw』『Do Not Feed the Monkeys』は大賞を含めた3部門でノミネートされている。
そのほか独特の「歌う」アクションにより冒険を進めていくアクションアドベンチャー『Wandersong』は、実際にノミネートされたのはナラティブ部門のみだが、大賞、ビジュアルアート、オーディオの3部門でも選外佳作として選ばれており、その実験的な試みが一定の評価を集めていることがわかる。なおナラティブ部門では『Wandersong』や『Return of the Obra Dinn』のほか、性交アクション『Genital Jousting』がノミネートされている。
各部門の受賞作品は3月20日、GDC 2019にて発表される。なお同日にはAAA級からインディーまで開発規模問わず優れたゲームを選出するGame Developers Choice Awardsの結果も発表される予定だ。
