今週はPCゲームを買わないつもりだったが、妻の冷たい視線を感じながらも『Age of Wonders III』を購入した。オークやゴブリンが登場するファンタジー物の4Xストラテジーをプレイしたかったのだ。5時間ほど遊んだが、まだ最初のキャンペーンすらクリアできていない。初心者にとっては難度が高い作品かもしれない。だが何度も繰り返し挑戦しているうちにきっと攻略の糸口が見えてくるはずだ。私にはその過程が楽しく感じられる。
どのようなゲームなのかは「『Age of Wonders 3』 4X-TBSとシミュレーションRPGを組み合わせた、まったく新しいファンタジー」が参考になるかもしれない。日本語には対応していないが、過去のシリーズや『Civilization』・『HEROES of Might and Magic』などを経験済みであればなじみやすいと思われる。ターンベースストラテジーが好きならば購入を検討してみてはいかがだろうか。
