HD-2D is a technology that fuses the classic look of pixel art with 3DCG, and it looks like Square Enix intends to use it in a variety of ways from new games to remakes of old classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SQEX\u6d45\u91ce\u30c1\u30fc\u30e0\u958b\u767a\u30e9\u30b8\u30aa\u3000\u7b2c0\u56de\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UUSmZs1I_yM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HD-2D was first used in 2018\u2019s <em>Octopath Traveler<\/em> and captured gamers\u2019 attention for being a new evolution of pixel art graphics. Since then, it\u2019s been used in a number of games, including the <em>Live A Live<\/em> remake which was announced during the Nintendo Direct on February 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on what was said during Asano\u2019s livestream, it sounds like behind the <em>Live A Live<\/em> remake\u2019s production was Square Enix\u2019s president ordering more use of HD-2D. First, they made a list of past titles that seemed suitable for HD-2D. From those titles, it sounds like <em>Live A Live<\/em> was the first one deemed suitable for the HD-2D treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LIVE A LIVE - Character Trailer - Nintendo Switch\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2tQt3Nq8hTw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/news\/202202\/10250530.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu interview<\/a> with producer Takashi Tokita, planning for the <em>Live A Live<\/em> Remake started in 2019, the year following <em>Octopath Traveler<\/em>\u2019s release. It also sounds like <em>ActRaiser<\/em> was another strong candidate for the HD-2D treatment. And while not HD-2D, that game did receive a remaster that released in September of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HD-2D\u2019s modern arrangement of the classic pixel art look seems like a perfect fit for remakes of Super Nintendo titles. Considering that planning for <em>Live A Live<\/em> started in 2019 and <em>Dragon Quest III<\/em>\u2019s HD-2D version has already been announced, perhaps there are other remakes being worked on behind the scenes. Thinking back to the days when Square and Enix were separate companies, there are countless classic gems between them. It\u2019s exciting to think about what we\u2019ll see get the HD-2D treatment next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, Asano\u2019s team is currently working on <em>Triangle Strategy<\/em> which will release for the Nintendo Switch on March 4 and also makes use of HD-2D.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Square Enix president requested more use of HD-2D.
