In Japan, two Pok\u00e9mon-themed Wordle<\/em> clones were released at roughly the same time. First, Twitter user @chuprod released Pokedle<\/em><\/a> on January 29, followed by @giga_yadoran\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon Wordle<\/em><\/a> on January 30. And after playing them, it\u2019s become obvious why Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> and Wordle<\/em> make for a good combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original Wordle<\/em><\/a> is a simple word guessing game where a new 5-letter word is made available to guess each day. Depending on the letters you enter, the background behind the letter will change. Green indicates the correct letter is in the correct position and yellow indicates that the letter is included in the word. Players enter in 5-letter words in an attempt to deduce the correct one. Wordle<\/em> can be played for free from a web browser, and players can share their results with one click making for a hit that\u2019s become a worldwide phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Josh Wardle\u2019s original Wordle<\/em>, other developers have been creating and releasing their own variations. Even just the other day, a Japanese version called Kotonoha Tango<\/em> released (related article<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pokedle<\/em> and Pok\u00e9mon Wordle<\/em> give this popular word game a Pok\u00e9mon twist. Before the release of Pok\u00e9mon Legends: Arceus<\/em>, there were a total of 898 Pok\u00e9mon, and these games have players guess at Pok\u00e9mon names from those made up of 5 Japanese characters.

When I actually tried playing, I noticed 5-character Pok\u00e9mon names were coming to mind pretty easily. That could be because I\u2019ve been playing Pok\u00e9mon <\/em>since I was a child, or maybe because the number of 5-character names is surprisingly high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> series had a long-standing rule that names couldn\u2019t be longer than 5 Japanese characters. All the way through the 5th generation, names were 5 characters or less (10 letters in English). Starting with Pok\u00e9mon X<\/em> and Y<\/em> in the 6th generation, the rule was finally lifted to allow names of up to 6 Japanese characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But just how many 5-character Japanese Pok\u00e9mon names are there? My curiosity was distracting me from other work, so I decided to get to the bottom of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pok\u00e9mon Red<\/em> and Green<\/em>
84 out of 151 (55%)

Pok\u00e9mon Gold<\/em> and Silver<\/em>
51 out of 100 (51%)

Pok\u00e9mon Ruby <\/em>and Sapphire<\/em>
76 out of 135 (56%)

Pok\u00e9mon Diamond<\/em> and Pearl<\/em>
73 out of 107 (68%)

Pok\u00e9mon Black<\/em> and White<\/em>
98 out of 156 (62%)

Pok\u00e9mon X<\/em> and Y<\/em>
45 out of 72 (63%)

Pok\u00e9mon Sun<\/em> and Moon<\/em>
48 out of 86 (55%)

Pok\u00e9mon Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em>
37 out of 89 (41%)

And when you include Melmetal (\u30e1\u30eb\u30e1\u30bf\u30eb) from Pok\u00e9mon GO<\/em>, we can see that 513 out of 898 Pok\u00e9mon (57%) have Japanese names made of 5 characters. We can also see that just because 6-character names were allowed in Pok\u00e9mon X<\/em> and Y<\/em>, doesn\u2019t mean a lot of them appeared. In fact, only 6 of the 72 new Pok\u00e9mon from that generation had 6-character names. That did increase to 21 out of 89 in Pok\u00e9mon Sword<\/em> and Shield<\/em>, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With over half of Japanese Pok\u00e9mon names being 5 characters long, it\u2019s a great match for the Wordle<\/em> formula. But that does leave the selection of words limited to 510 choices, which is less than other Wordle<\/em> versions. The positive being that answers could be easier to guess. If you know the names of Pok\u00e9mon, that is. In these games, your Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> knowledge will trump even the biggest vocabulary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
