Umapyoi!\u201d \u00a0\u201cUmapyoi\u201d being thought to refer to the theme song of <em><strong>Uma Musume Pretty Derby<\/strong><\/em>, \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu.\u201d In September of last year, Yamaguchi praised the song on a radio program, and even now, still seems hooked on the tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Uma Musume Pretty Derby<\/em> is a cross-media franchise featuring Uma Musume (horse girls) who have inherited the names of popular racehorses. The video game version is a simulation game where players take on the role of a trainer and train various Uma Musume. Its popularity rose after the second season of the anime aired and the videogame version was released in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>Umapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> is the theme song of the game, with the phrase, \u201cUmapyoi! Umapyoi!\u201d being a memorable line that\u2019s repeated throughout the song. It\u2019s also been gaining popularity on YouTube and TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u30a6\u30de\u5a18 \u30d7\u30ea\u30c6\u30a3\u30fc\u30c0\u30fc\u30d3\u30fc \u30d7\u30ed\u30e2\u30fc\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3\u30e0\u30fc\u30d3\u30fc\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HYrVKLBhitE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ichiro Yamaguchi is the singer, guitarist, songwriter, and all-around frontman of the Japanese band Sakanaction. In September of last year, Yamaguchi praised \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tfm.co.jp\/lock\/sakana\/index.php?itemid=17550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tokyo FM radio program<\/a>. The theme of the show was to see how popular songs sounded when their BPM (beats per minute) was reduced, making them slower. Changing the BPM changes the feel of a song, and \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> was used as an example to show that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When listening to the song, Yamaguchi commented that it was really well done. \u201cIt goes against the rules of music in a lot of ways,\u201d Yamaguchi pointed out. But that wasn\u2019t meant to be criticism. Yamaguchi went on to praise the song saying, \u201cIt reminded me that music doesn\u2019t have rules. It\u2019s freeing. One is likely the unconventional structure of the song. According to Yamaguchi, parts like the A section, B section, and hook each sound like different songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song certainly has key changes throughout and goes against conventional music theory. This radio program is likely how Yamaguchi came to know about the song and what led to the previously mentioned \u201cUmapyoi! Umapyoi!\u201d tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lyrics, composition, and arrangement for \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> were handled by Cygames\u2019s Akihiro Honda. Formally of Konami, Honda provided music for series like <em>Beatmania IIDX<\/em> and <em>Pop\u2019n Music<\/em>. Honda also composed theme songs for the <em>Metal Gear Solid<\/em> series such as <em>Heavens Divide<\/em>. After leaving Konami, Honda composed <em>Sins of the Father<\/em> and <em>Quiet\u2019s Theme<\/em> for <em>Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/em>. He\u2019s a composer with a long and proven track record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Honda says that making \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> was quite difficult. In an interview with Japanese pop culture website <a href=\"https:\/\/realsound.jp\/2018\/09\/post-255740_2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Real Sound<\/a>, Honda said, \u201cI made the song while drinking two bottles of wine and dancing in my underwear.\u201d He was asked to make what\u2019s called a denpa song, an intentionally strange, yet catchy, type of over-the-top music. It sounds like things weren\u2019t coming together well so he went about making it in this manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, \u201cUmapyoi Densetsu<em>\u201d<\/em> was born from the time-tested abilities of an accomplished composer combined with the magic of alcohol.
