Japanese game developer Impachi announced on November 4 that its roguelike strategy game Everbrink would be coming to Steam<\/a> in Early Access next year. Set on crumbling islands in the sky, the title blends deckbuilding mechanics with elements of 4X (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impachi is an indie studio based in Tokyo, consisting of staff members with experience working at major game companies including Square Enix, Sega, Platinum Games and GREE. The studio is led by Harvestella and Another Eden producer Daisuke Taka, who himself is a passionate fan of the 4X strategy game genre, particularly Sid Meier\u2019s Civilization. According to Taka, the developers at Impachi have been focusing on how to capture the fun of 4X games in a dynamic and engaging gameplay format \u2013 which is how Everbrink came to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Everbrink, players use the cards from their hand to summon units such as elves and Cerberus, place structures on the map or cast spells to take down foes. The units and structures you\u2019ve placed on the island make up your Territory, which you will have to keep expanding in order to survive. New units and structures can only be placed next to your Territory, and you can also use the cards to directly fight the nearby enemies. Players will also need to gather different types of resources in order to expand their Territory and push their front lines forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One important detail about Everbrink\u2019s floating island is that it\u2019s been affected by a phenomenon called the Collapse. The floating island is made up of numerous hexagonal tiles which crumble away after every turn. Neither your units nor the enemies are safe. However, tiles that will fall down are marked in advance, so with some good timing and enough strategizing, you can use the Collapse to your advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capturing an enemy\u2019s stronghold lets you choose a new floating chunk of land to the main island and expand your territory. To survive, you\u2019ll have to keep expanding walkable land and advancing forward before everything succumbs to the Collapse. After attaching a new island to your existing one, your structures and deck will carry over as they are, but the units you summoned will disappear from the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, some of the new islands may feature certain events \u2013 a Cairn lets you pick a new card to add to your deck, an Altar is used to upgrade unit cards, and if you stumble upon a Trader, you may be able to get your hands on a stalemate-breaking item. These events occur during your own turns in battle, and the game is designed so that you\u2019re able to build your deck while in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everbrink is scheduled to release in Early Access via PC (Steam<\/a>) in 2027. A demo is coming soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
