The future of the upcoming anime adaptation of the Mii-chan and Miss Yamada<\/strong> manga series is currently under discussion, according to a statement made by publisher Kodansha to domestic advocacy groups on October 30.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mii-chan and Miss Yamada anime was announced on July 26, but the project quickly became the subject of criticism among the Japanese public and several advocacy organizations<\/a>. Concerns have been raised regarding the source material\u2019s approach to depicting vulnerable individuals and intellectual disability, as well as adjacent social issues like the name \u201cMii-chan\u201d proliferating as a slur among young people in real life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its response<\/a> to the Association for Protecting Vulnerable Children and Adults (which had lodged an official petition to Kodansha regarding the anime on October 5), Kodansha acknowledged that the social discourse following the anime’s announcement has raised issues that warrant careful consideration. As a result, the publishing company and other members of the anime\u2019s production committee are currently discussing the project\u2019s future, including whether to move forward with it at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlease rest assured that we have no intention of moving forward with the anime adaptation without first addressing the<\/em> opinion<\/em> papers and requests submitted by your organization and the three aforementioned groups. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the company also mentioned that it is arranging discussions with several external organizations, including groups representing foster care networks, people affected by mental illness, and psychiatric healthcare institutions. The publisher indicated that it hopes to hear a wider range of opinions before making any further decisions. This stance seems to differ from the last official update made on July 27, when the production committee simply denied malicious intent and maintained that it would go forward with the anime<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masako Gunji, who is a journalist and the representative of the Association for Protecting Vulnerable Children and Adults, published the emailed statement on her X account<\/a> as well as in a Note article<\/a>. The original petition and open letter sent by the association argued that the Mii-chan and Miss Yamada anime could reinforce negative stereotypes or potentially harm people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, explaining that the \u201cnarrative reinforces a framework in which such individuals are perceived as inherently prone to causing trouble and easily exploited for sexual purposes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of this writing, no final decision has been announced regarding whether the anime adaptation will move forward, be revised, or otherwise affected. Discussions between Kodansha, production committee members, and external organizations still underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mii-chan\u202fand Miss Yamada\u202fis a manga by Azuki Nene,\u202fset in Tokyo\u2019s red-light district. The story follows Mii-chan, a new\u202femployee\u202fat\u202fa\u202fhostess\u202fclub,\u202fand her more experienced colleague, Yamada. Due to\u202fher implied disability, Mii-chan\u202fcannot\u202fread and often does things that fall outside social norms,\u202fwhich leads to\u202fmistakes\u202fand\u202fridicule\u202ffrom customers and other staff.\u202fMeanwhile, Yamada\u202ftries\u202fto help\u202fMii-chan\u202fand watch over her, leading to a kind of co-dependent friendship forming between the two.\u202fThe story builds toward\u202fan extremely dark outcome, depicting violence and sexual exploitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
