Taking the stage at the opening ceremony of CEREC \u2013 a new academic research and education hub centered on games \u2013 he talked about the evolution and future potential of video games as a medium, as well as the importance of human \u201ccuriosity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/game.watch.impress.co.jp\/docs\/kikaku\/2144557.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GameWatch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.4gamer.net\/games\/991\/G999104\/20260930012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4Gamer<\/a>, Kutaragi spoke of the massive scale the global game industry has grown to, valued at $186 billion in the software market alone and surpassing film, television and music. Despite how much gaming has evolved since the early 1970s, Kutaragi doesn\u2019t consider it a mature industry that has already reached its limits, predicting that there are still significant breakthroughs to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, he mentions that while modern games have grown in scale and evolved graphically, the content itself has stagnated. He says that recent games have reinforced this impression, noting that the approach to creating content remains fundamentally unchanged from the original PlayStation project he spearheaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1222\" height=\"576\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1222px) 100vw, 1222px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-4.png 1222w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-4-380x179.png 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-4-768x362.png 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, he believes the industry is at a major turning point and poised to advance to the \u201cnext stage.\u201d After reflecting on how his team developed the PlayStation with the intent to \u201cchange the world,\u201d Kutaragi described the game industry of the past as one that \u201ccreated the world\u2019s most cutting-edge technology\u201d rather than merely following it. He urged fellow industry professionals and students present at the panel to adopt this same mindset in their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, Kutaragi also advised students that pursuing curiosity in games and beyond is an absolute must.
