On July 26, Kodansha and its associated production committee announced that an anime adaptation of Mii-chan\u202fand Miss Yamada<\/strong>\u202fis due to premiere in 2027. The manga series centers on a young woman who struggles with reading social cues and is inferred to be mentally disabled. The announcement has sparked controversy in Japan due to the sensitive subject matter, as well as adjacent issues like the name \u201cMii-chan\u201d becoming a pejorative term among young people in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most recently, the Japan Autism Association (hereafter JAA) released an opinion paper<\/a> addressing the manga\u2019s problematic nature. Titled \u201cAn Opinion on the Completed Manga Mii-Chan and Miss Yamada,\u201d the paper argues that real-life struggles, particularly those of individuals with learning disabilities, are being \u201cexploited for commercial success (profit).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the uninitiated, Mii-chan\u202fand Miss Yamada\u202fis a manga by Azuki Nene,\u202fset in Tokyo\u2019s red-light district. The story follows Mii-chan, a new\u202femployee\u202fat\u202fa\u202fhostess\u202fclub,\u202fand her more experienced colleague Yamada. Due to\u202fher disability, Mii-chan\u202fcan\u2019t\u202fread and often does things that fall outside social norms,\u202fwhich leads to\u202fmistakes\u202fand\u202fridicule\u202ffrom customers and other staff.\u202fMeanwhile, Yamada\u202fattempts\u202fto help\u202fMii-Chan\u202fand watch over her, leading to a kind of co-dependent friendship forming between them.\u202fThe story leads\u202ftowards\u202fan extremely dark outcome, depicting violence and sexual exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the manga does not explicitly state that Mii-chan has a disability, the portrayal in the work and Azuki Nene\u2019s public statements about the character suggest that it can be inferred that she has a developmental disability. The paper states that the association felt it imperative to raise its opinion on the matter, as it has received reports of cases where the term \u201cMii-chan\u201d is used as a pejorative to mock and insult people with mental disabilities in real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another issue raised by JAA was a promotional YouTube video uploaded to Kodansha\u2019s YanMaga Daily Life Channel, which featured a segment with subtitles that read: \u201cI want to see Mii-chan suffer a terrible fate, \u201cI want to see the dregs of this world,\u201d and more messages with a similar tone, spoken by the manga\u2019s editors. The video in question was set to private on August 1. JAA argues that the decision to frame the manga\u2019s story as such is proof that the publisher is endorsing voyeuristic enjoyment at the expense of the character\u2019s misfortune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cReal Mii-chan\u201d acrylic stands, which portray a crying, half-naked version of the character, were also called into question, alongside the publisher\u2019s decision to present it as a rare prize in a lottery. The paper condemned the action as \u201cthe publisher\u2019s admission to commodifying the suffering of the character,\u201d causing discomfort for people with family members with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JAA ultimately believes that measures such as setting age ratings and broadcasting the anime away from widely available television networks are inadequate, stating that they have strong concerns about the Mii-chan and Miss Yamada anime given the culture surrounding the manga and the previous treatment of such delicate topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper goes on to conclude with the following words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom the standpoint of our association, which seeks to protect people with autism, we ask for your further understanding so that there is no ridicule or contempt for people with disabilities, and that no mockery is made of their siblings or family members. At the same time, we ask that real-world hardships, physical or mental, not be used as material for pursuing monetary success, but rather to lead people in need to necessary support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While criticism towards the Mii-chan and Miss Yamada anime has been made since its initial announcement in July, arguments have been made in favor of the adaptation, citing that the demands to cancel the animation would jeopardize the medium\u2019s freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The anime production committee for Mii-chan and Miss Yamada has not issued any new statements since its last X post on the matter on July 27, which denies any malicious intent and promised to take precautions in how the source material is handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
