Studio Ghibli<\/strong> chairman and producer Toshio Suzuki recently talked to Asahi Shimbun<\/a> about generative AI and the infamous \u201cGhibli-style\u201d AI illustrations that flooded the Internet at one point. He also touched on how director Hayao Miyazaki approaches his creative work and the value of Studio Ghibli in the age of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Suzuki, though he was inundated with interview requests during the height of the “Ghibli-style AI illustration\u201d boom, he purposely declined them because he considered it to be a fad that people would quickly get bored of. Sure enough, the trend died down, even with Studio Ghibli refusing to comment<\/a> on the situation in any official capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suzuki added that \u201cwhile AI can easily produce a certain type of animation, anyone with even a little knowledge can see right through it. It doesn\u2019t really mean much, and it\u2019s not interesting either.\u201d He contrasts generative AI, which accumulates information available online to put out an \u201coptimal solution,\u201d with Miyazaki, who has apparently cut himself off from outside information to focus on creation ever since working on 2023\u2019s The Boy and the Heron. According to Suzuki, Miyazaki doesn\u2019t even know what generative AI is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about Studio\u00a0Ghibli\u2019s\u00a0place in the age of AI, Suzuki\u00a0ironically remarks\u00a0that\u00a0the technology itself\u00a0offers\u00a0a good answer\u00a0to\u00a0this\u00a0question when prompted:\u00a0\u201cGhibli will\u00a0evolve into a cultural entity demonstrating what it means for humans to create art.”\u00a0He firmly asserts that Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s artistic expression cannot be replicated by AI or CG.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
