Yesterday, Crunchyroll announced<\/a> that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights for Makoto Shinkai\u2019s next animated feature film. The film will be co-distributed globally by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment to all countries, excluding Asia but including India, with CoMix Wave Films (CWF) stating<\/a> that everyone involved is working hard on production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the announcement, Shinkai touched<\/a> on why the overseas press release came before anything was revealed domestically, saying that it was \u201cdown to internal circumstances.\u201d The director has been working on this new project with his global partners for years now, aiming to reach audiences both in Japan and abroad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the film\u2019s production, Shinkai says he\u2019s devoted to making it a worthwhile watch for theatergoers: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBooking a seat, paying a price that\u2019s by no means cheap, and heading out the door to the cinema \u2013 watching a film is a costly form of entertainment. Our entire team is working tirelessly to create a film that\u2019s worth every penny, and ideally one that\u2019s so exceptionally entertaining you\u2019ll feel you\u2019ve got your money\u2019s worth.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While details on the movie itself are scarce for the time being, Shinkai says that the domestic announcement and theatrical release \u201c(probably)\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0that far off now.\u201d\u00a0Considering\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been four years since his last film, Suzume, fans\u00a0of Shinkai\u2019s work\u00a0are due\u00a0for\u00a0a good cry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
