Creators deny discriminatory intent\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, it was announced\u00a0that\u00a0an anime adaptation of\u00a0Kodansha&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mii-chan\u00a0and Miss Yamada\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>a dark\u00a0manga series\u00a0centered around a character with an intellectual disability \u2013\u00a0is due to premiere in 2027.\u00a0The announcement was met with significant backlash and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/voice.charity\/events\/18085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requests for the project to be cancelled<\/a>\u00a0in Japan, which the production committee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/miichan__anime\/status\/2081696104350122142?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has addressed in a new statement<\/a>.\u00a0While the\u00a0anime\u2019s\u00a0production\u00a0is still fully on track, the producers have denied malicious intent and promised to take some precautions\u00a0in\u00a0how they handle\u00a0the source material.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written by Nene Azuki, Mii-chan\u00a0and Miss Yamada\u00a0is\u00a0set in Tokyo&#8217;s red-light district. The story follows Mii-chan, a new\u00a0employee\u00a0at\u00a0a\u00a0hostess\u00a0club,\u00a0and her more experienced colleague Yamada. Due to\u00a0her disability, Mii-chan\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0read, and often does things that fall outside of social norms,\u00a0which leads to\u00a0mistakes\u00a0and\u00a0ridicule\u00a0from customers and other staff.\u00a0Meanwhile, Yamada\u00a0attempts\u00a0to help\u00a0Mii-Chan\u00a0and watch over her, leading to a kind of co-dependent friendship forming between them.\u00a0The story leads\u00a0towards\u00a0an extremely dark outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u300e\u307f\u3044\u3061\u3083\u3093\u3068\u5c71\u7530\u3055\u3093\u300f\u30a2\u30cb\u30e1\u5316\u6c7a\u5b9a\u30b9\u30da\u30b7\u30e3\u30ebPV\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oavP2RMLbis?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After\u00a0the Mii-chan\u00a0and Miss Yamada anime was announced on July 26, users in Japan became strongly polarized, with one side\u00a0contending\u00a0that\u00a0the title\u00a0could\u00a0promote harmful\u00a0stereotypes\u00a0or discrimination\u00a0towards\u00a0people with\u00a0intellectual\u00a0disabilities\u00a0and\u00a0is\u00a0thus\u00a0inappropriate for\u00a0airing,\u00a0and the other side arguing that\u00a0a cancellation would jeopardize freedom of expression.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the main arguments against\u00a0Mii-chan\u00a0and Miss Yamada revolve around how\u00a0disability itself is treated\u00a0within the story, with\u00a0users\u00a0suggesting that it leans too far into shock value and spectacle\u00a0instead of\u00a0depicting life with a disability in a realistic\u00a0and nuanced way. Most\u00a0notably, ever since the manga&#8217;s growth in popularity, there have allegedly been instances of\u00a0young people, including kids, using\u00a0&#8220;Mii-Chan&#8221;\u00a0as a pejorative towards people they perceive as\u00a0\u201cnon-neurotypical,\u201d\u00a0which some people see as a clear sign of\u00a0a\u00a0harmful influence.\u00a0The creators have also been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/otakazedbDDG\/status\/2081428712705454332?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized for not denouncing this behavior openly<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make matters worse, the announcement of the anime was made on the same day as the 10-year memorial of the prejudice-driven Sagamihara killings, which claimed the lives of&nbsp;19 disabled people. While no doubt a coincidence, this was also perceived as an insensitive move from the production committee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prominently, Japanese animator and character designer Terumi Nishii, known for her work on the JoJo&#8217;s Bizarre Adventure&nbsp;and Jujutsu Kaisen&nbsp;anime,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NishiiTerumi\/status\/2081314060814213252?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took&nbsp;a vocal stand<\/a>&nbsp;against&nbsp;the production&nbsp;on X.
