{"id":70128,"date":"2026-07-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=70128"},"modified":"2026-07-27T18:52:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T09:52:18","slug":"dragon-quest-franchise-leans-further-into-google-gemini-collaboration-with-new-ai-event-announced-in-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dragon-quest-franchise-leans-further-into-google-gemini-collaboration-with-new-ai-event-announced-in-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragon Quest franchise leans further into Google Gemini collaboration with new AI event announced in Japan\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/article\/202607\/81963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.denfaminicogamer.jp\/news\/2607212h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>, Square-Enix has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DQ_PR\/status\/2079400983126519832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that its long-running Dragon Quest franchise will be hosting a collaborative event with Google\u2019s Gemini AI service on July 30\u00a0in Tokyo.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dubbed&nbsp;\u201cGemini Quest,\u201d&nbsp;the event will take place at four locations in Tokyo\u2019s Shibuya and Harajuku wards, where participants will use the Gemini app to scan barcodes with their phone cameras to generate spells, which they\u2019ll be able to cast&nbsp;via AR in order to free captured monsters and ultimately defeat the dragon lord.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Players who successfully complete the quests will be eligible for a limited edition physical&nbsp;\u201cmini medal\u201d&nbsp;reward featuring engravings of iconic dragon quest monsters such as slimes and killer machines, which will be given out by&nbsp;\u201cvillager\u201d&nbsp;actors&nbsp;manning&nbsp;each of the designated locations. The event is slated to take place in Shibuya 109, MAGNET by Shibuya 109, Tokyo Plaza Harajuku&nbsp;Harakado, and&nbsp;Takeshitaguchi&nbsp;Park. Back in April, the Japan-only MMORPG Dragon Quest X\u00a0announced plans to add an\u00a0in-game\u00a0support character called\u00a0Oshaberi\u00a0Slimey\u00a0powered by Gemini for players to interact with. Series creator Yuji Horii\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dragon-quest-creator-wants-ai-game-characters-to-feel-like-real-friends-hopes-dq10-players-will-confide-in-slimey-chatbot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was enthusiastic about the addition<\/a>, believing that the AI chatbot could act as\u00a0\u201ca friend to each individual player,\u201d\u00a0further enhancing immersion and putting a fresh spin on the nearly-15-year-old MMO.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one might expect, the series\u2019&nbsp;foray into generative AI experimentation has been met with a mixed response from fans. While some fans seem excited by the new event, others have expressed disappointment in Square-Enix for embracing&nbsp;the controversial&nbsp;technology, highlighting issues such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_Gemuki\/status\/2079456923510784119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental impact<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the video game side of things,&nbsp;Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is slated for release on December 3.
