{"id":69810,"date":"2026-07-18T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=69810"},"modified":"2026-07-17T18:25:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T09:25:48","slug":"former-weekly-shonen-jump-manga-artist-says-he-was-continuously-denied-a-hiatus-despite-worsening-health-issues-during-late-90s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/former-weekly-shonen-jump-manga-artist-says-he-was-continuously-denied-a-hiatus-despite-worsening-health-issues-during-late-90s\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Weekly Shonen Jump manga artist says he was\u00a0continuously\u00a0denied a hiatus despite\u00a0worsening health issues\u00a0during late 90s\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japanese manga artist Kazumata Oguri, whose comedy series&nbsp;Hanasaka&nbsp;Tenshi&nbsp;Tenten-kun&nbsp;was&nbsp;serialized&nbsp;in&nbsp;Shueisha&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Weekly Shonen Jump<\/strong>&nbsp;and adapted into an anime, recently talked about what it was like&nbsp;writing&nbsp;for the magazine during the 90s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a personal blog post published via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/note.com\/ogurin1010\/n\/ne2eaeb18387e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">note<\/a>&nbsp;on July 17, Oguri&nbsp;says that around the time his series&#8217; anime adaptation&nbsp;entered its second season,&nbsp;he found his health steadily deteriorating due to&nbsp;autonomic dysfunction and chronic sleep deprivation.&nbsp;Once he started to experience symptoms like eye twitching and temporary loss of vision, he consulted with his editor (a &#8220;Mr. M&#8221;) about&nbsp;going on hiatus with the manga, suspecting the stress and fatigue were causing his problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Oguri says his editor would not allow him to take a break. Since he saw more successful peers&nbsp;around him&nbsp;like One Piece author Eiichiro Oda go on hiatuses, Oguri committed himself to making&nbsp;his manga more popular so that he may be granted a break too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&nbsp;subsequently&nbsp;succeeded in doing so, ranking&nbsp;No. 2 in Jump&#8217;s reader survey charts thanks to a clever cliffhanger he&nbsp;came up with&nbsp;out of desperation.
