JCB (short for Japan Credit Bureau,\u00a0a major global payment brand and credit card issuer based in Japan) has\u00a0officially\u00a0entered\u00a0a partnership\u00a0<\/a>with\u00a0the insurance company\u00a0Mysurance\u00a0to start selling\u00a0“oshikatsu\u00a0cancellation insurance,\u201d\u00a0which was developed\u00a0in collaboration with fan-culture media platform\u00a0Oshicoco\u00a0(source:\u00a0Oricon News<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means Japan now has a dedicated insurance policy for fans worried that\u00a0their plans to\u00a0see their favorite idol, voice actor,\u00a0stage actors, etc.,\u00a0might be derailed at the last minute.\u00a0Specifically, the policy\u00a0aims to relieve the financial burden of\u00a0fans who travel regionally or internationally to support their\u00a0oshi,\u00a0only to be met with abrupt cancellations of\u00a0events\u00a0or transport links.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will fully compensate you for the cancellation fees of accommodations, flights, etc., if you cancel your trip,\u201d the\u00a0official\u00a0Mysurance\u00a0webpage<\/a>\u00a0promises fans.\u00a0Though, they\u00a0also\u00a0add: \u201cUnfortunately, the emotional impact of not being able to see your\u00a0oshi\u00a0cannot be alleviated by insurance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea\u00a0behind this\u00a0rather strange\u00a0insurance is that\u00a0missing a long-awaited performance due to sudden natural disasters, scheduling disruptions, or health issues is an inherent risk\u00a0to otaku. According to a stylized infographic on the website, which displays data from a February 2025 survey of 1,191 Japanese otaku conducted by\u00a0Oshicoco, one in five fans has experienced a sudden event cancellation\u00a0due to reasons out of their control, and lost money\u00a0as a result.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The graphic highlights that among those affected, one in three incurred cancellation fees exceeding 30,000 yen\u00a0(about $185)\u00a0for flights and hotels alone, with some severe cases topping 100,000 yen\u00a0(over $600). These statistics are accompanied by text quotes from\u00a0otaku\u00a0recalling\u00a0their personal horror stories, such as contracting influenza three days before a concert, being placed under a doctor’s order to\u00a0sit out an\u00a0anniversary live\u00a0show, or\u00a0seeing a highly anticipated 2.5D stage play graduation performance canceled at the last minute.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The insurance comes in two plans.\u00a0The\u00a0more\u00a0budget-friendly “Simple” plan\u00a0covers transit delays, or sudden hospitalization for the traveler or a pet, while\u00a0a\u00a0comprehensive “Wide” plan\u00a0adds protection for official event cancellations, infectious diseases, and\u00a0even\u00a0passport expiration.\u00a0The site also features a detailed\u00a0FAQ section<\/a>\u00a0outlining strict eligibility\u00a0trules. To qualify, the insurance policy must be\u00a0purchased\u00a0within\u00a014 days\u00a0of booking the travel\u00a0accommodations, provided the departure date is still at least 9 days away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
