Despite\u00a0producing\u00a0hits like\u00a0My Dress-Up Darling\u00a0season 2, Spy x Family season 3, and\u00a0The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity\u00a0last year, Japanese animation studio\u00a0CloverWorks<\/strong>\u00a0has reported a net loss of 38 million JPY (roughly $235 thousand USD) for the fiscal year ended\u00a0March 2026\u00a0(source:\u00a0GameBiz<\/a>).\u00a0This marks the second consecutive year the studio has experienced\u00a0a\u00a0net loss,\u00a0with the margin widening from the previous fiscal year\u2019s\u00a0loss of 24 million JPY ($148 thousand USD).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent fiscal results\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0necessarily mean the studio is in trouble. As seen in past reports,\u00a0CloverWorks\u00a0has experienced losses in previous fiscal years (such as in 2019 and 2020), only for it to make\u00a0a\u00a0comeback afterwards (as seen in 2021 and 2024).\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0worth noting that\u00a0CloverWorks\u00a0is a\u00a0wholly-owned\u00a0subsidiary of\u00a0Aniplex, whose\u00a0anime business is\u00a0thriving,\u00a0according to recent financial reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand,\u00a0Japanese\u00a0anime industry\u00a0insider\u00a0liu<\/a>\u00a0commented on X\u00a0that this\u00a0news\u00a0points to a structural issue in how anime production works\u00a0and should not be taken lightly\u00a0nor viewed\u00a0on its own.\u00a0They propose that\u00a0studios like\u00a0CloverWorks,\u00a0which are owned by bigger publishers, are placed in a system whereby the parent\u00a0company\u00a0(the \u201cprofit center\u201d)\u00a0monopolizes licensing\u00a0and other profits, while\u00a0the studios\u00a0(the \u201ccost centers\u201d)\u00a0are\u00a0kept as \u201cfactories\u201d\u00a0that are barely able to break even, compromising independence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
