Following the story of Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo, two Japanese-American outcasts, as they struggle to survive in the rapidly changing environment of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Japan, the title positions itself as a prequel to the Like a Dragon series. The game will depict a massive story spanning over 5 decades of Daito\u2019s life, <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/stranger-than-heavens-massive-50-year-saga-intentionally-prioritizes-convincing-lies-over-historical-accuracy-says-rgg-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depicting a \u201cconvincing\u201d but ultimately fictional recreation of Taisho and Showa-era Japan<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like the Like a Dragon series, Stranger Than Heaven features a rather lavish cast, <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/snoop-dogg-collaborates-with-ado-in-rgg-studios-stranger-than-heaven-theme-song-appears-as-an-in-game-character\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including popular musicians like Ado and Snoop Dogg<\/a>. And in a somewhat divisive move during this year\u2019s Summer Game Fest, RGG Studio revealed that the late rapper Tupac Shakur would also be joining the cast as a key character in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, AUTOMATON had the opportunity to attend a joint media interview with RGG Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama, and learn more about the casting process for the game, as well as the details behind Snoop Dogg and Tupac\u2019s appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"STRANGER THAN HEAVEN | Tupac &amp; Cast Reveal Trailer\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5jgItPVHs3I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yokoyama explained that, back when he was working on Yakuza 0, he learned that the only reason for selecting cast members should be \u201cwhether they suit the character you want to portray.\u201d For example, the three lieutenants of the Dojima family are depicted by Hitoshi Ozawa, Riki Takeuchi and Hideo Nakano, but Yokoyama considers the reason behind their characters gaining worldwide popularity was not because the three actors are particularly famous globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you see the three lieutenants appear in Yakuza 0, you don\u2019t really recognize them as famous Japanese celebrities,\u201d Yokoyama said. \u201cWhen Daisaku Kuze (played by Hitoshi Ozawa) appears on screen, you\u2019re just going to think \u2013 <em>It\u2019s Daisaku Kuze<\/em>. Also, if I happen come up with a character I\u2019d like a specific person to play, I sometimes write the script as if it were addressed directly to that person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030002.jpg\" alt=\"Daisaku Kuze \" class=\"wp-image-68609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030002.jpg 800w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030002-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030002-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, Yokoyama argues &nbsp;that he doesn\u2019t want celebrity appearances themselves to be the focal point of RGG Studio\u2019s works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be completely honest, my intention as a game creator isn\u2019t to make our casting choices take the spotlight and overshadow everything else. I want people to focus on the gameplay and the narrative experience itself. To the audience, it may seem like we\u2019re only doing it for attention, and I may end up being perceived as someone who\u2019s just getting a kick out of being surrounded by celebrities. But that is absolutely not my intention. We continue to create games drawing on the experience we gained from Yakuza 0 \u2013 that actors\u2019 performances can elevate the entire work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking about the casting choices for Stranger Than Heaven, Yokoyama said that Yu Shirota was a perfect fit for the estranged, ambiguous character of Makoto Daito. However, given the protagonist\u2019s unique circumstances as an outcast, the team needed to add characters like Orpheus and Yu Shinjo, who\u2019ve lived a similar life and have experienced similar struggles as Daito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The role of Yu Shinjo was offered to Dean Fujioka, who, like Shirota, also has a strong musical background. As Yokoyama explains, \u201csinging\u201d is a crucial theme of Stranger Than Heaven, and the casting choices reflect this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030001.jpg\" alt=\"Snoop Dogg punch\" class=\"wp-image-68607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030001.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260623-686030001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to the role of Orpheus, Yokoyama offered it to Snoop Dogg, whom he had met by chance while working on another project. Coincidentally, this is what led to the eventual addition of late rapper Tupac Shakur into the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInitially, we hadn\u2019t considered having Tupac appear in the game. It was in the latter half of development, after I\u2019d become quite close with Snoop Dogg, that we decided to include him. Developing a character that\u2019s super important to the story, we thought that Tupac might be a good fit for the role, so I consulted with Snoop Dog about it. He later introduced us to Tupac\u2019s family and other acquaintances, and we created his character under their supervision,\u201d Yokoyama explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STRANGER THAN HEAVEN&nbsp;is set to release on January 15,&nbsp;2027&nbsp;for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X\u2758S and PlayStation 5.
