Meccha Chameleon<\/strong>\u00a0developer\u00a0Lemorion\u00a0recently\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that the viral hide-and-seek multiplayer game has sold over 7 million copies.\u00a0Coincidentally, a new Japanese-style map will be\u00a0released\u00a0within the next\u00a048 hours.\u00a0The announcement comes not long after the\u00a0game\u2019s concurrent player count\u00a0hit\u00a0a new all-time high at over 340,500 players (SteamDB<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meccha Chameleon has been making waves ever since it was released for Windows on June 10. It sold over 2 million copies in just five days – a massive feat for a self-published indie project. This drew the attention of fellow Japanese developers<\/a>, who saw it as tremendously inspiring success-story given the industry\u2019s difficult circumstances in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game\u00a0would sell\u00a0roughly 1\u00a0million more copies over the next few days,\u00a0surpassing\u00a03 million copies\u00a0in the week following its release. Though rumors\u00a0about\u00a0Meccha\u00a0Chameleon\u00a0potentially having robust personnel and financial\u00a0backing started to pop up, co-creator HAGANEIRO quickly dismissed them, disclosing that the game uses Epic Games\u2019 free multiplayer networking tools, which is how the two-person team is able to handle server operations by themselves. They also added that\u00a0no money was spent on advertising<\/a>, suggesting that\u00a0it was\u00a0word-of-mouth and the game\u2019s \u201cfun-to-stream\u201d design\u00a0that has\u00a0brought them this far.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meccha\u00a0Chameleon released its first additional map, the candy-filled\u00a0Sugar Land<\/a>, on June 18.\u00a0If the current release\u00a0pace\u00a0is any\u00a0indication, players can look forward to a wealth of levels and content in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
