Following a live demo event held in Los Angeles,&nbsp;game director Eiichiro Sasaki (known for directing Resident Evil 6) and producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi&nbsp;(who produced numerous titles in the RE, Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis series) talked to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/article\/202606\/77038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu<\/a>&nbsp;about what players should expect from their new studio\u2019s debut title.&nbsp;Of note, they&nbsp;addressed&nbsp;rumors&nbsp;about the game being a \u201csoulslike.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stupid Never Dies | Second Trailer\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9JE7ETLFizc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From what we know so far,&nbsp;Stupid Never Dies is a&nbsp;funky&nbsp;fast-paced action RPG that emphasizes&nbsp;growth.&nbsp;You play as Davy, a&nbsp;bottom-tier&nbsp;zombie boy, who sets out on a quest to bring his&nbsp;crush&nbsp;Julia&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;a frozen human girl&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;back to life.&nbsp;The basic game cycle consists of timed dungeon runs during which you&nbsp;defeat enemies, collect strange items and level up. A core gameplay mechanic is&nbsp;\u201cStyle Eat,\u201d&nbsp;which lets&nbsp;Davy&nbsp;steal&nbsp;defeated&nbsp;enemies\u2019 abilities by eating their cores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can unlock up to ten\u00a0different\u00a0monster combat styles (on top of Davy\u2019s original zombie style),\u00a0with species ranging from werewolves, vampires, harpies, lizardmen and more.\u00a0As different abilities will prove beneficial in different situations, you can equip up to two combat styles\u00a0at a time\u00a0and switch between them in real time,\u00a0though\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no guarantee\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0encounter\u00a0the\u00a0styles\u00a0you want\u00a0<em>when<\/em>\u00a0you want them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1527\" height=\"859\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1527px) 100vw, 1527px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-68265-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-68265-001.jpg 1527w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-68265-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-68265-001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally,\u00a0an\u00a0\u201cOvertech\u201d\u00a0mechanic will allow you to\u00a0biohack\u00a0Davy\u2019s\u00a0body with\u00a0various weapons and implants, which\u00a0work regardless of what\u00a0monster style\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0transformed into.\u00a0The game also comes with a burst mechanic \u2013 by landing attacks in combat,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0fill up a Davy Burst gauge which, when activated, will instantly boost Davy\u2019s stats and level him up dramatically.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.famitsu.com\/article\/202606\/77038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Famitsu<\/a>, Kobayashi says that if you\u2019ve never\u00a0held a controller\u00a0in your life, clearing Stupid Never Dies is going to be a challenging task, but other than that, the game has been balanced\u00a0so that anyone with a reasonable amount\u00a0of gaming experience game can reach the ending\u00a0(which will take about\u00a020 to\u00a030 hours on average). Addressing fans&#8217; concerns, he clarifies that the game is not a\u00a0soulslike-style title. In fact, going into development, he explicitly told his team that\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0the genre\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0be\u00a0going\u00a0for.\u00a0This checks out with sentiments Kobayashi previously expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/interviews\/interview-after-juggling-5-to-10-titles-at-a-time-at-capcom-devil-may-cry-and-dragons-dogmas-producer-is-now-able-to-pour-all-of-his-energy-into-one-passion-project-at-his-new-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talking to AUTOMATON<\/a>, when he mentioned he was aiming for a good balance between technical and tactical, rather than pure, punishing action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1523\" height=\"855\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1523px) 100vw, 1523px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-header.jpg 1523w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-header-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260616-header-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Director\u00a0Sasaki points out\u00a0that\u00a0in Stupid Never Dies,\u00a0certain elements of progression are reset\u00a0when you die or clear a dungeon, but there are also plenty of\u00a0abilities that carry over and\u00a0accumulate, so you never get thrown back to zero. \u201cI think the interesting part\u00a0of this game\u00a0is that it mixes progression you can control with progression you\u00a0can&#8217;t.
