Set to release in 2027, the game does not hold back on gory expressions, and as far as we were able to see from the trailer, it\u2019s as brutal and violent as it can get. So, while ILL hasn\u2019t yet been rated by the respective age rating boards of each region it\u2019s releasing in, we can imagine that it\u2019s likely going to be a 18+ release pretty much everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, recently, many Japanese gamers and horror enthusiasts have expressed concern online over the possibility of the game not getting released in the country at all. We literally have the Z rating to make sure minors can\u2019t buy it, and they\u2019re not letting grown adults play at their own risk.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So, why does the Z rating even exist? I seriously don\u2019t get it<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide some background, Steam and PlayStation store pages for ILL confirm that the game will feature Japanese interface and subtitles, which does suggest that a Japanese release is planned. But what alarmed gamers was the fact that, despite ILL being featured in the Japanese-language State of Play broadcast via the global PlayStation channel on YouTube, the trailer was completely removed from the same video broadcast on the Japanese PlayStation channel. There was no official explanation as to why the trailer was missing either, which led Japanese users to suspect that the game may be at risk of getting cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve mentioned earlier in the article, it is not completely uncommon for overseas horror games to fail to pass CERO\u2019s review, despite being initially announced for a Japanese release. This has to do with the rating body being extraordinarily strict with expressions of gore (especially severed body parts) &#8211; something even <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dead-rising-deluxe-remaster-will-keep-the-term-psychopath-and-ramp-up-gore-devs-say\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/dead-rising-deluxe-remaster-will-keep-the-term-psychopath-and-ramp-up-gore-devs-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">big developers like Capcom have openly talked about<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260612-681910001.jpg\" alt=\"The Callisto Protocol\" class=\"wp-image-68197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260612-681910001.jpg 960w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260612-681910001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20260612-681910001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most recent examples of this is Striking Distance Studio\u2019s sci-fi horror The Callisto Protocol, which <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20221027-16440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failed to get approval by CERO back in 2022 <\/a>due to its depictions of violence and gore. The developers explained that adjusting the content to comply with CERO\u2019s standards would have prevented them from providing the experience players had expected, leading them to give up on the Japanese release of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just several months later, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/articles\/newsjp\/20221217-231100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that Electronic Arts\u2019 2023 survival horror Dead Space would not be getting a console release in Japan. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SeptillionGames\/status\/1604024377905143808?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a post<\/a> by Electronic Arts Japan General Manager Sean Noguchi, the reason for this was that \u201cthe console version in Japan falls outside the scope of rating compliance.\u201d In order to \u201ccircumvent\u201d this, Dead Space was published for the Japanese market as a digital, PC only release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a game is digital-only, it is possible to release it with a rating from IARC\u2019s generic rating system instead of CERO (with some exceptions). This means that Dead Space was ultimately able to release on platforms like Steam without undergoing any censorship.
