The\u00a0Dragon Quest<\/strong>\u00a0franchise celebrated its <\/sup>40th\u00a0anniversary on May 27, which\u00a0has brought\u00a0with it\u00a0a number of\u00a0commemorative announcements and releases, including a slew of anniversary merchandise.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One such product\u00a0is a hand-crafted music box\u00a0which plays the iconic Dragon Quest Overture theme music, originally composed by\u00a0the late\u00a0Koichi Sugiyama and featured in every Dragon Quest title since the series\u2019\u00a0inception. The asking price was 132,000 yen, which is currently equivalent to approximately $820 USD. Pre-orders for the luxurious item opened on the afternoon of\u00a0June 3,\u00a0and\u00a0sold out by the following morning, as spotted by\u00a0MagMix<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some Japanese fans were taken aback by the\u00a0high price point, with at least one commenting that it seemed about ten times higher than what such a novelty trinket would normally cost,\u00a0many of\u00a0the responses were overwhelmingly positive. Each of the music boxes sold\u00a0is\u00a0said to be hand-crafted by Japanese artisans using high-quality walnut wood, making it a premium collector\u2019s item for hardcore fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a050-note\u00a0music box will measure approximately 8 inches wide, 5 inches long, and\u00a03 inches deep, and the included musical piece will feature a playing time of\u00a0roughly 1\u00a0minute and 52 seconds. Pre-orders are expected to ship by February 28, 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans who were unable or unwilling to reserve such an expensive product will not be left out to dry, however, as Square\u00a0Enix\u00a0is\u00a0still offering a large slate of 40th\u00a0anniversary merchandise on their website such as plush toys, figures, keychains, and other collectibles at a variety of more affordable prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the future of the Dragon Quest game franchise itself is looking bright, as evidenced by the recently unveiled trailer for the upcoming Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams and the announcement of a new spin-off title, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. While release dates for said games have yet to be announced, fans hopefully won\u2019t need to wait long until their next Dragon Quest fix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
