{"id":67689,"date":"2026-06-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=67689"},"modified":"2026-06-04T17:36:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T08:36:38","slug":"onimusha-way-of-the-swords-demo-may-be-on-the-easier-side-but-its-combat-already-promises-depth-and-plenty-of-flexibility-between-offense-and-defense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/reviews\/onimusha-way-of-the-swords-demo-may-be-on-the-easier-side-but-its-combat-already-promises-depth-and-plenty-of-flexibility-between-offense-and-defense\/","title":{"rendered":"Onimusha: Way of the Sword\u2019s demo may be on the easier side, but\u00a0its\u00a0combat already\u00a0promises depth and\u00a0plenty of\u00a0flexibility between offense\u00a0and defense\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Given that&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;been 20 years since&nbsp;a mainline&nbsp;Onimusha game&nbsp;was released,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;understandable&nbsp;when fans say&nbsp;that a lot is riding on the success of&nbsp;<strong>Onimusha: Way of the Sword<\/strong>.&nbsp;While the&nbsp;recent&nbsp;playable demo does little to flesh out the narrative (Capcom seems to be saving that for the full release), it gives players&nbsp;a&nbsp;good idea&nbsp;of how combat will play out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1516\" height=\"854\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1516px) 100vw, 1516px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-001.jpg 1516w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-001-768x433.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"offensive-moves-focus-on-dealing-health-and-stamina-damage\">Offensive moves focus on dealing health and stamina damage&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Offense is&nbsp;largely&nbsp;composed&nbsp;of&nbsp;one-handed (fast but&nbsp;weak) and two-handed (slow but&nbsp;strong) attacks.&nbsp;Both attacks&nbsp;deal&nbsp;regular health damage as well as stamina damage, the latter of which chips away at your opponent\u2019s stamina gauge (two-handed attacks deal more health and stamina damage). When an opponent\u2019s stamina&nbsp;is depleted, you can perform a Break&nbsp;Issen&nbsp;by pressing the associated prompt on the screen. This plays a flashy animation followed by an instant kill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1517\" height=\"852\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1517px) 100vw, 1517px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-002.jpg 1517w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-002-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-002-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"defense-is-where-combat-really-shines\">Defense is where&nbsp;combat really shines&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have three core defensive options: parrying, deflecting, and&nbsp;dodging. Parrying involves pressing&nbsp;an input&nbsp;just before an&nbsp;opponent\u2019s&nbsp;attack&nbsp;makes contact. If done properly,&nbsp;you\u2019ll&nbsp;avoid damage and be awarded an opportunity to counterattack.&nbsp;Parries also fill up your Blaze&nbsp;Gauge, which, when&nbsp;full, unlocks the Blaze State,&nbsp;temporarily&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;your attack power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1515\" height=\"849\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1515px) 100vw, 1515px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-003.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-003.jpg 1515w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-003-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-003-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Somewhat similar\u00a0to parrying is deflecting, which requires you to hold the parry\u00a0input\u00a0and press another input at the right time.\u00a0A\u00a0successful deflect does not\u00a0guarantee a counterattack,\u00a0but\u00a0it\u00a0deals\u00a0more stamina damage,\u00a0which can lead to\u00a0future beatdowns. Deflecting also allows you to fire opponents\u2019 arrows back at them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1531\" height=\"849\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1531px) 100vw, 1531px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-004.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-004.jpg 1531w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-004-380x211.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-004-768x426.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly,&nbsp;dodging&nbsp;can be used to avoid all sorts of attacks. Avoiding attacks with&nbsp;a properly timed dodge&nbsp;fills up your Reflex Gauge, which, when full, can be used to execute a Reflex Combo.&nbsp;What you really want to watch out&nbsp;for, however, are&nbsp;enemy&nbsp;grabs.&nbsp;While&nbsp;attacks that can&nbsp;be&nbsp;parried&nbsp;and deflected&nbsp;have no visual indicators, grabs are denoted by a glowing blue light.&nbsp;Pressing the&nbsp;dodge input&nbsp;at the right time&nbsp;triggers&nbsp;a&nbsp;grab&nbsp;reversal&nbsp;and&nbsp;is the only way to avoid taking damage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with&nbsp;previous&nbsp;Onimusha titles, the best way to get good at combat&nbsp;is to learn your opponents&#8217; attack patterns and adapt your defense accordingly.&nbsp;You can still wail on enemies by&nbsp;mashing the attack inputs, but taking a moment to understand when they are vulnerable&nbsp;and exploiting those weaknesses&nbsp;yields more Souls and&nbsp;faster progress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/interviews\/onimusha-way-of-the-sword-is-not-a-soulslike-and-not-open-world-director-says-instead-it-expands-on-what-the-series-is-known-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Unlike&nbsp;Soulslikes&nbsp;like Lies of P and Elden Ring<\/a>,&nbsp;the windows for parrying, deflecting, and dodging in the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo are quite forgiving. Save for the series\u2019 infamous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/onimusha-2-remaster-devs-decided-not-to-lower-the-skill-floor-for-performing-issen-staying-true-to-series-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Issen&nbsp;and Chain&nbsp;Issen&nbsp;counters<\/a>, which&nbsp;require&nbsp;you to commit to them by properly timing an attack input just as an enemy hits you, you&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;have&nbsp;a hard time&nbsp;defending yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1516\" height=\"853\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1516px) 100vw, 1516px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-005.jpg 1516w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-005-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-005-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-demo-isn-t-that-difficult\">The demo&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;that difficult&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For all&nbsp;this&nbsp;talk of attacks, parries, deflects, and dodges, the demo itself&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;that hard. You have the option of choosing between&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/we-didnt-want-to-just-nerf-the-enemies-and-call-it-a-day-onimusha-way-of-the-sword-devs-on-designing-a-story-mode-that-isnt-trivially-easy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Story<\/a>&nbsp;or Action&nbsp;difficulty levels&nbsp;(the latter of which is supposed to be more challenging), but the damage you do to enemies, and their seemingly passive nature in the harder difficulty,&nbsp;don&#8217;t pose much of a threat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several instances where you find yourself facing more than two or three enemies.&nbsp;Rather than attacking you simultaneously, foes charge at you one or two at a time&nbsp;while the others wait&nbsp;on the sidelines.&nbsp;Though&nbsp;combat in past&nbsp;Onimusha titles typically&nbsp;veers&nbsp;towards&nbsp;one-on-one or&nbsp;two-on-one&nbsp;battles,&nbsp;the way&nbsp;crowd fights&nbsp;are presented in the demo&nbsp;feels a bit underwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1517\" height=\"847\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1517px) 100vw, 1517px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-006.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67699\" id=\"a-lot-was-teased-in-the-demo-that-hasn-t-been-fully-explored-yet\">A lot was teased in the demo that\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0been fully explored yet\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These&nbsp;issues&nbsp;with the difficulty may very well&nbsp;change&nbsp;upon the full release.&nbsp;Previous&nbsp;Onimusha games featured a variety of difficulty levels, ranging from easy to extremely difficult.&nbsp;To face these tougher challenges, the demo introduces several features that seem optional at first but become&nbsp;more important&nbsp;later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From interacting with objects in the environment (flipping a tatami mat to block enemy projectiles,&nbsp;only to kick it&nbsp;at&nbsp;them afterwards,&nbsp;is a stroke of&nbsp;ingenuity) to Blade Locks that have a chance to occur when parrying or deflecting,&nbsp;the demo doesn\u2019t even let you touch&nbsp;its&nbsp;upgrade system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1517\" height=\"850\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1517px) 100vw, 1517px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-007.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-007.jpg 1517w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-007-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/202606024-67689-007-768x430.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While&nbsp;the demo can be completed in less than an hour, the many ways in which you can approach combat will have you&nbsp;playing&nbsp;it more than once.&nbsp;With only three months away until&nbsp;the full game\u2019s&nbsp;release, this is&nbsp;a great way&nbsp;to&nbsp;plan your samurai playstyle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Onimusha: Way of the Sword is&nbsp;set&nbsp;to release&nbsp;on September 25&nbsp;for&nbsp;Windows&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/2638890\/Onimusha_Way_of_the_Sword\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steam<\/a>),&nbsp;PlayStation 5, and Xbox
