Suzuki was involved in the creation and development of most of the series\u2019 earlier entries, including <strong>Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei<\/strong>, its first installment. He is credited as one of the inventors of the \u201cfusion,\u201d and \u201cnegotiation\u201d systems, which later went on to become the flagship gameplay elements of the franchise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking to Encount, Suzuki reveals that the idea for the \u201cnegotiation\u201d system came from his frustration towards a Dungeons &amp; Dragons session he experienced back in the day. Specifically, the developer was stumped by how players are expected to treat goblins in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt never made sense to me why you can\u2019t speak to the goblins. [\u2026] Goblins are also sentient creatures, right? They have a language, and form societies. But if you run into them inside of a dungeon, there is no room for negotiation \u2013 you have no option but to kill them. I really hated that,\u201d Suzuki explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"804\" height=\"396\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56031-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56031-header.jpg 804w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56031-header-380x187.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56031-header-768x378.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, while Dungeons &amp; Dragons is extremely flexible when it comes to playstyle (homebrew rules have been a thing since way back), it seems like Suzuki\u2019s encounter with a strictly \u201cby the book\u201d Dungeon Master was the push he needed to come up with Megami Tensei\u2019s negotiation system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter asking the Dungeon Master to let me speak to the goblins, they read the rulebook and told me,<em> it\u2019s not in the rules so you can\u2019t do it<\/em>. So I thought, <em>then make up the rules yourself<\/em>. Those feelings were where Megami Tensei\u2019s negotiation system came from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of thinking of the enemies as mere obstacles, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei was one of the first RPGs at the time which allowed the player to negotiate and turn them into allies. However, while the game\u2019s director praised the concept when it was pitched to him by Suzuki, he still called it \u201ca bit weak\u201d to be released on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This prompted Suzuki to come up with the idea for the \u201cfusion\u201d system to go along with it. Apparently, the system was heavily inspired by the Devilman manga, which Suzuki has been a fan of ever since elementary school.
