Anime!<\/a>&nbsp;about the company\u2019s shifting strategy when it comes to anime production and distribution.&nbsp;This comes amidst Netflix\u2019s&nbsp;formation of&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/netflix-and-mappa-form-strategic-partnership-to-exclusively-distribute-anime-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic partnership with Chainsaw Man anime production studio MAPPA<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;full-scale entry into&nbsp;anime-related media mix&nbsp;strategies (like merchandising and theatrical releases).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to Anime!&nbsp;Anime!,&nbsp;Yamano confirms that&nbsp;Netflix is taking a more flexible approach to anime rights and production in Japan, moving away from fully exclusive licensing models&nbsp;and towards&nbsp;a collaborative approach with&nbsp;its partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, Netflix often secured comprehensive&nbsp;rights to titles&nbsp;(which&nbsp;remains&nbsp;common in overseas markets), but&nbsp;Yamano acknowledges&nbsp;that the company\u2019s Japan team has been&nbsp;operating&nbsp;differently, with fewer titles under complete exclusivity. As an example, the hit anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya!&nbsp;received a theatrical release following its Netflix digital release, achieving&nbsp;significant&nbsp;success on both fronts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This change&nbsp;reflects&nbsp;Netflix\u2019s view that&nbsp;anime\u2019s potential&nbsp;as a medium&nbsp;extends beyond the core work itself, as&nbsp;Yamano&nbsp;explains,&nbsp;\u201cAnime&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;just something you enjoy as&nbsp;a standalone&nbsp;work,&nbsp;media mix is also important.&nbsp;It might be faster if we could handle everything&nbsp;ourselves and&nbsp;pass the benefits on to the creators,&nbsp;but&nbsp;at this stage, we\u2019ve determined that partnering with media mix professionals to expand the franchise,&nbsp;rather than holding all the rights ourselves,&nbsp;is one of the options for growing anime.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1237\" height=\"691\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1237px) 100vw, 1237px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260505-66223-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260505-66223-001.jpg 1237w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260505-66223-001-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/20260505-66223-001-768x429.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, Netflix is increasingly collaborating with partners&nbsp;and&nbsp;consultants&nbsp;experienced in these areas, such as companies capable of handling theatrical distribution and&nbsp;other forms of&nbsp;franchise development.&nbsp;At the same time, the company is&nbsp;also&nbsp;deepening its involvement in the production process itself, according to Yamano.&nbsp;\u201cIn the past, it was more like, \u2018please buy the finished product, but now we\u2019re discussing things from the production stage, including how to expand&nbsp;the franchise.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Netflix does not formally&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in Japan\u2019s traditional production committee system&nbsp;(in which publishers,&nbsp;broadcasters&nbsp;and other relevant parties form project-based alliances to fund anime production), Yamano noted that the company often&nbsp;operates&nbsp;in&nbsp;a similar&nbsp;manner&nbsp;with partners.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s not a production committee per se, but we align with partners in a committee-like structure,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yamano emphasized\u00a0that \u201cJapanese anime is at the forefront when it comes to building\u00a0fandoms and media mix strategies, and we believe that working closely with the creators leads to better business results.\u201d\u00a0But despite increasing competition for titles,\u00a0Netflix says it\u2019s prioritizing\u00a0being\u00a0\u201cthoughtful\u201d\u00a0about the projects it puts out, as Yamano comments,\u00a0\u201cI believe that the appeal of anime\u00a0ultimately depends\u00a0heavily on whether the creators want to make it, so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0crucial that they express a desire to work with us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/toho-announces-shift-to-anime-mass-production-phase-amidst-increasing-demand-aiming-to-reach-quota-of-30-seasons-per-year-by-2032\/\">Toho announces shift to \u201canime mass production phase\u201d amidst increasing demand.
