DMM Games<\/strong>, a major digital distribution platform and publisher of PC and mobile games run by EXNOA, is planning to launch its own app store for iOS. This was announced during a media briefing attended by Famitsu<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, DMM Games counts over 40 million users, and is home to popular titles like Kantai Collection and\u00a0Touken\u00a0Ranbu\u00a0Online. Notably, it was also the\u00a0domestic\u00a0publisher\u00a0of Too Kyo Games\u00a0and\u00a0Neilo\u2019s\u00a0full-priced\u00a0game\u00a0Shuten\u00a0Order<\/a>.\u00a0As it expands its platform and publishing business,\u00a0DMM Games has announced\u00a0that it plans to release a\u00a0proprietary store app for iOS devices\u00a0sometime\u00a0in June or beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes in response to changes Apple has made to its\u00a0guidelines\u00a0thanks\u00a0to Japan\u2019s new\u00a0\u201cMobile Software Competition Act\u201d (MSCA).\u00a0The\u00a0new law\u00a0was enacted in 2024 and\u00a0came into full effect starting December 18, 2025, aiming to regulate\u00a0fair competition in\u00a0the market and weaken the monopoly of\u00a0major tech firms like Apple and Google. Among other\u00a0changes, the law requires companies to open their OSs to third-party app stores, making initiatives like DMM Games\u2019s\u00a0possible (though Apple was quick to introduce some tricky countermeasures<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Apple and Google\u2019s app stores are somewhat notorious among mobile game developers for charging sky high handling fees (up to 30% commission), DMM Games is likely hoping to circumvent this problem by launching its own store. Additionally, this will allow them to offer apps that are not typically available on Apple\u2019s App Store. As Famitsu<\/a> reports, the company stated that it \u201cmay offer a variety of services, including R-rated versions of games.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DMM Games has certainly had its share of troubles with app stores when it comes to things like characters in revealing costumes (not nudity or sexual content). Last year, they were suddenly told by Apple that they would have to replace almost all character art and animations<\/a> in their live-service RPG Twinkle Star Knights, despite the game being approved and running without issues for years prior. The game was blocked from updating due to this issue, which surely impacted the publisher. Perhaps with their own app, the risk of such complications will be lower. As for fully adult rated games, this seems to be under consideration for the time being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
