{"id":64372,"date":"2026-03-30T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=64372"},"modified":"2026-03-30T14:48:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T05:48:28","slug":"steams-updated-pricing-tools-could-push-game-prices-in-japan-higher-with-weak-yen-reflected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/steams-updated-pricing-tools-could-push-game-prices-in-japan-higher-with-weak-yen-reflected\/","title":{"rendered":"Steam\u2019s updated pricing\u00a0tools\u00a0could\u00a0push game prices in Japan higher with weak yen reflected\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Valve&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/groups\/steamworks\/announcements\/detail\/501722749836722406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;an update to Steam\u2019s&nbsp;pricing&nbsp;conversion&nbsp;tools for game developers on March 28.&nbsp;While&nbsp;Steam gives developers full reign over&nbsp;determining&nbsp;prices for&nbsp;their games,&nbsp;the&nbsp;conversion tools are&nbsp;designed&nbsp;to help with setting&nbsp;regional prices&nbsp;for each of the platform\u2019s&nbsp;37&nbsp;supported&nbsp;currencies&nbsp;by offering recommendations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\u00a0recommended prices are\u00a0based\u00a0not only on\u00a0exchange rates,\u00a0but\u00a0factors\u00a0like\u00a0local purchasing power, and with the new update, Valve has refreshed its conversion data to better reflect current market conditions around the world.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0whereas\u00a0Steam previously offered only one recommended conversion method, developers will now be\u00a0able to choose from the following three methods when setting regional prices (quoted fully via Valve):\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Exchange\u00a0Rate\u00a0Conversion<\/strong>:\u00a0This method uses a simple currency exchange rate at the time\u00a0indicated\u00a0on the page.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Purchasing\u00a0Power\u00a0Conversion<\/strong>:\u00a0This method uses public data about the average purchasing power of customers within a given country and\/or region.\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Multi-variable conversion<\/strong>:\u00a0This method uses multiple data sources for each currency, including local purchasing power, the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange\u00a0rate.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Valve, the&nbsp;\u201cmulti-variable conversion method\u201d&nbsp;is closest to the recommended prices previously shown in the tool. The company has also released a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/partner.steamgames.com\/pricing\/explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pricing&nbsp;explorer<\/a>&nbsp;tool that lets you see how major USD price points&nbsp;will convert into each currency based on the three different methods. The information provided here suggests that&nbsp;game&nbsp;prices in Japanese yen are likely to be&nbsp;impacted&nbsp;with the update.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, for a game priced at $15.99 USD:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exchange rate\u00a0conversion: \u00a52,500 (as of March 28, 2026)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Purchasing power conversion: \u00a51,600\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multi-variable conversion: \u00a52,050\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, the recommended\u00a0Japanese\u00a0price for a $15.99 game was \u00a51,800, making the new\u00a0multi-variable conversion pricier. Not only that, but the new exchange rate conversion, which reflects the\u00a0yen\u2019s severe depreciation against the\u00a0dollar,\u00a0bumps\u00a0the price\u00a0up\u00a0by over 10%. While\u00a0pricing\u00a0ultimately remains\u00a0to be decided at each developer\u2019s discretion,\u00a0many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AUTOMATONJapan\/status\/2037750977080840414\/quotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japanese\u00a0gamers on X<\/a>\u00a0have taken the news as an indicator\u00a0that games are bound to become more expensive going forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1159\" height=\"575\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1159px) 100vw, 1159px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260328-433007-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260328-433007-001.jpg 1159w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260328-433007-001-380x189.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260328-433007-001-768x381.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Valve&nbsp;previously&nbsp;updated its&nbsp;conversion tool in October 2022. At the time,&nbsp;the company&nbsp;stated&nbsp;it would increase the frequency of&nbsp;its&nbsp;updates to respond more quickly to economic changes, but in practice,&nbsp;updates have been infrequent.&nbsp;Back in October 2022&nbsp;(during the COVID-19 pandemic), for example,&nbsp;the Polish&nbsp;z\u0142oty&nbsp;experienced&nbsp;harsh&nbsp;fluctuations against the dollar. As a result,&nbsp;Steam\u2019s&nbsp;recommended prices&nbsp;for the region&nbsp;rose sharply, leading to many voices&nbsp;calling for&nbsp;Valve to revise its&nbsp;conversion method, along with campaigns urging developers to manually adjust prices for the Polish market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complaints about pricing conversions were not limited to Poland&nbsp;either,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Valve has now finally updated its pricing data. In addition, developers&nbsp;can now choose from&nbsp;multiple conversion options.
