Oasis Management Company, a Hong-Kong based international hedge fund management firm, has acquired a large number of shares in major Japanese anime, manga and game publisher Kadokawa, as reported by GameBiz<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a report submitted to the Kanto Local Finance Bureau on March 19, after buying over 13 million shares, Oasis has acquired an 8.86% stake in Kadokawa, exceeding the 5% threshold for \u201clarge shareholders.\u201d The purpose of Oasis\u2019s acquisition of shares is described as \u201cportfolio investment\u201d, as well as \u201cimportant proposal activities.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oasis Management Company is known\u00a0to be\u00a0an activist investor. Not to be confused with political\u00a0activism, the term refers to companies that\u00a0seek\u00a0to buy significant stakes in companies\u00a0in order to\u00a0influence how they are managed, usually with the purpose of increasing shareholder returns.\u00a0Oasis has recently shown interest\u00a0in (and exerted pressure over)\u00a0several major Japanese companies,\u00a0including Nidec<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kao Corporation<\/a>.\u00a0In the game industry, the fund\u00a0also owns\u00a0a stake in Nintendo,\u00a0which it\u00a0famously\u00a0urged to<\/a>\u00a0\u201cimmediately\u00a0enter\u00a0the mobile market\u201d back in 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to Kadokawa, the aforementioned \u201cimportant proposals\u201d by Oasis are described as being in the interest of \u201cprotecting shareholder value,\u201d although nothing specific has been announced so far. Besides being a major publisher of manga and light novels, Kadokawa is also the parent company of Elden Ring developer FromSoftware and owner of several domestic anime studios. It remains to be seen whether and in what ways Oasis will seek to influence the company\u2019s leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
