The world also includes locations such as Mount Takao and the remote island municipality of&nbsp;Hachij\u014d Town, covering an&nbsp;incredibly&nbsp;vast&nbsp;area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mikuni, the recreation\u00a0was build using\u00a0PLATEAU\u00a0\u2013 3D\u00a0data provided by\u00a0Japan\u2019s\u00a0Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism\u00a0(MLIT).\u00a0Unrelated to Minecraft,\u00a0PLATEAU\u00a0was launched as\u00a0an\u00a0initiative led by the ministry to create 3D models\u00a0or \u201cdigital\u00a0twins\u201d\u00a0of cities across Japan. Using data obtained through aerial surveying\u00a0and similar methods,\u00a0PLATEAU provides 3D urban models including both buildings and\u00a0geographic\u00a0features.\u00a0The government has made this\u00a0data freely available for anyone to use\u00a0(including for commercial purposes)\u00a0and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0generally\u00a0applied\u00a0in fields such as infrastructure management, urban planning simulations, and disaster prevention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/minecraft-20260316-429605-002-1080x608-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/minecraft-20260316-429605-002-1080x608-1.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/minecraft-20260316-429605-002-1080x608-1-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/minecraft-20260316-429605-002-1080x608-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image Credit: Rikuma Mikuni on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Tech_Rope0801\">X<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve&nbsp;the recreation, Mikuni developed a tool that converts&nbsp;PLATEAU\u2019s&nbsp;data into&nbsp;Minecraft&nbsp;with high accuracy.&nbsp;He\u2019d&nbsp;been&nbsp;working&nbsp;on the tool&nbsp;alongside his university research&nbsp;for the past two&nbsp;years, and&nbsp;has now finally completed it.&nbsp;Since there are PLATEAU datasets&nbsp;available&nbsp;for each prefecture&nbsp;in Japan, Mikuni also plans to convert&nbsp;other locations into Minecraft worlds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many have&nbsp;attempted&nbsp;to recreate real-world locations in&nbsp;Minecraft&nbsp;using actual geographic data&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/japans-government-just-dropped-a-huge-free-minecraft-map-and-its-cooler-than-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including Japan\u2019s&nbsp;MLIT itself<\/a>),&nbsp;what makes this project&nbsp;noteworthy&nbsp;is that a single&nbsp;player developed an original&nbsp;tool and used it to recreate the entire Tokyo Metropolis&nbsp;area&nbsp;from&nbsp;open-source&nbsp;data.
