On the other hand, downsizing has still been happening, just in \u201cinvisible ways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic was&nbsp;prompted&nbsp;by&nbsp;Sega and&nbsp;Mixi&nbsp;game producer&nbsp;Taira Nakamura, who&nbsp;recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/tairanakamura\/status\/2027896000850104398?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented on his X account<\/a>, \u201cOne reason Japanese companies&nbsp;appear to have&nbsp;fewer instances of layoffs despite facing comparable pressure when it comes to costs is likely due to Japan&#8217;s employment regulations. Consequently, developers continue to face considerable hardship. Japan too is experiencing reductions in developer numbers,&nbsp;just&nbsp;in a less visible manner.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;seems to be&nbsp;creating a rift between major and small developers, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KAKUBOMB\/status\/2028306116393005188?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">former Game Studio&nbsp;Inc. creator Kaku Okuda explains<\/a>,&nbsp;\u201cThe gaming industry has become incredibly polarized, split into a tiny handful of established, hugely successful content and everything else.&nbsp;There\u2019s&nbsp;almost no middle ground.&nbsp;(&#8230;)&nbsp;Titles that were previously considered mid-tier&nbsp;in&nbsp;scale have&nbsp;likely seen&nbsp;their development and promotional costs skyrocket compared to before.&nbsp;This is due to the demand for quality exploding, coupled with work-style reforms making it impossible to overburden staff, leading to inflated development costs. The expense of ensuring titles&nbsp;don&#8217;t&nbsp;get buried in the market has also risen.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"525\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20211019-179534-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20211019-179534-001.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20211019-179534-001-380x200.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20211019-179534-001-768x403.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;also worth mentioning that aside from these examples, Japan\u2019s mobile game industry has seen&nbsp;pretty overt&nbsp;workforce reductions in the form of&nbsp;companies&nbsp;soliciting&nbsp;\u201cvoluntary retirements\u201d and offering buyouts.&nbsp;Just last month, Dragon Quest Walk developer COLOPL announced that it had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/japanese-developer-colopl-lets-go-of-104-employees-after-number-of-voluntary-redundancy-applicants-exceeds-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">let go off 104&nbsp;full-time&nbsp;employees<\/a>&nbsp;(out of 676)&nbsp;who agreed to buyouts amidst continued financial losses.&nbsp;Other recent examples include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/japanese-gacha-game-developer-asks-100-employees-to-resign-voluntarily-only-47-accept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KLab<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/layoffs-hit-japan-as-final-fantasy-brave-exvius-developer-asks-80-employees-to-voluntarily-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gumi<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/another-japanese-game-company-is-asking-staff-to-voluntarily-quit-their-jobs-amidst-financial-losses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enish<\/a>.&nbsp;Beyond mobile games, last year, data from Japan\u2019s pension service showed that&nbsp;major developer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/bandai-namco-studios-staff-silently-reduced-by-over-100-people-japan-pension-service-database-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bandai Namco Studios had downsized by 117&nbsp;employees&nbsp;in a year<\/a>, although the circumstances&nbsp;remained&nbsp;unknown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japanese industry professionals talk about the &#8220;less visible ways&#8221; rising costs have been affecting domestic developers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":55,"featured_media":61590,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_gspb_post_css":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[17],"class_list":["post-61587","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-japan-related-news"],"blocksy_meta":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
