This title will be fully self-published by CyberConnect2, from planning to development to release.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hackZERO?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hackZERO<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/dothack?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#dothack<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/J5nrgnXU83\">pic.twitter.com\/J5nrgnXU83<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CyberConnect2 Official (EN) (@cc2information) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cc2information\/status\/2023355425437921703?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As fans argue about who copied whom&nbsp;and which came first, now might be a great moment to look back on what the creators of both franchises had to say about this very topic (because yes,&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;been very aware of the comparisons for a long time). Back in 2016,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dengekionline.com\/elem\/000\/001\/232\/1232871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dengeki Online<\/a>&nbsp;hosted a three-way discussion between Reki Kawahara, the author of the original Sword Art Online light novel series, Yosuke&nbsp;Futami, producer of the SAO game series at Bandai Namco Entertainment, and Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO&nbsp;of .hack&nbsp;developer CyberConnect2.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the topic, Matsuyama said, \u201cFor the past ten-plus years, I\u2019ve been very conscious of&nbsp;SAO\u2026 I mean, I\u2019ve naturally known&nbsp;about&nbsp;the series&nbsp;and enjoyed&nbsp;it.&nbsp;SAO&nbsp;and&nbsp;.hack&nbsp;actually debuted at almost the same time&nbsp;(around 2002).&nbsp;I think that\u2019s why,&nbsp;whenever&nbsp;.hack&nbsp;did something, people would say it was copying&nbsp;SAO, and whenever&nbsp;SAO did somehting,&nbsp;people would say it was copying&nbsp;.hack&nbsp;(laughs).\u201d While he admitted to feeling some \u201clingering frustration\u201d about this&nbsp;situation&nbsp;at one point,&nbsp;he said the air&nbsp;got&nbsp;completely cleared when he talked to Kawahara&nbsp;privately&nbsp;for the first time. The two agreed that it was&nbsp;likely&nbsp;SAO and .hack\u2019s close release date that led audiences to&nbsp;view them as similar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1519\" height=\"847\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1519px) 100vw, 1519px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-header.jpg\" alt=\"Sword Art Online: Fragmented Daydream\" class=\"wp-image-57855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-header.jpg 1519w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-header-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-header-768x428.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But when it comes to actual thematic similarities, Matsuyama called them superficial at best. \u201cOn the surface, there are similarities, like the players being unable to log out of the game. But in terms of the nature of the works, the drama depicted, and the themes,&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;completely different. Anyone familiar with both&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;confuse them, and&nbsp;I believe&nbsp;they\u2019ll&nbsp;understand each work\u2019s strengths.&nbsp;SAO&nbsp;is&nbsp;SAO,&nbsp;and&nbsp;.hack&nbsp;is&nbsp;.hack.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, he mentioned&nbsp;that with,&nbsp;once&nbsp;again, both series being created at&nbsp;roughly the&nbsp;same&nbsp;time,&nbsp;they&nbsp;likely&nbsp;both drew influence from the major online games&nbsp;of&nbsp;the time. Matsuyama&nbsp;named&nbsp;Ultima Online, Ragnarok Online, Lineage and FFXI and Diablo as&nbsp;some of&nbsp;the&nbsp;inspirations&nbsp;behind .hack, while Kawahara confirmed that he&nbsp;likewise drew from Ultima Online and Ragnarok Online&nbsp;when creating&nbsp;SAO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1514\" height=\"843\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1514px) 100vw, 1514px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-001r.jpg\" alt=\".hack\/\/G.U. Last Recode\" class=\"wp-image-57857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-001r.jpg 1514w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-001r-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260218-57850-001r-768x428.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, when it comes to the SAO game series, there was&nbsp;clear inspiration taken&nbsp;from .hack, as confirmed by Yosuke&nbsp;Futami. The producer commented, \u201cI&nbsp;actually loved&nbsp;the&nbsp;first&nbsp;.hack&nbsp;and its&nbsp;sequel&nbsp;.hack\/\/G.U., so when creating the&nbsp;SAO&nbsp;games,&nbsp;I was heavily inspired by them.&nbsp;(&#8230;)&nbsp;Every time we released a game, someone somewhere would say,&nbsp;\u2018It\u2019s&nbsp;copying&nbsp;.hack.\u2019&nbsp;I never felt we&nbsp;were copying it, but since I love the series, I figured there must have been some&nbsp;influence in&nbsp;there. (&#8230;) When you&nbsp;play&nbsp;.hack, it really makes you want to try an actual online game, because it&nbsp;faithfully captures what makes online games appealing.&nbsp;When creating the&nbsp;SAO&nbsp;games, I hoped players might feel the&nbsp;same&nbsp;way I once did.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cc2.co.jp\/hackzero\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.hack\/\/Z.E.R.O<\/a>\u00a0is currently in development by\u00a0CyberConnect2.
