Joining in on discussion among Japanese game developers on X,&nbsp;Pocketpair\u2019s&nbsp;CEO&nbsp;Takuro Mizobe recently shared some tidbits about how&nbsp;the company&nbsp;hires new talent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt&nbsp;Pocketpair,\u201d he writes&nbsp;on his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/urokuta_ja\/status\/2014593734827246006?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personal X account,<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cwe ask game designer&nbsp;candidates to&nbsp;submit&nbsp;screenshots of their playtime history on Steam.&nbsp;In fact, if you&nbsp;don&#8217;t&nbsp;play games on Steam at all, you&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;make it past the resume screening stage.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mizobe, apart from the fact that he wants to hire genuine, hardcore Steam gamers as staff, the purpose of this is also to test the candidates\u2019&nbsp;sensibilities as game designers (referred to as \u201cgame planners\u201d in Japan). However, Steam&nbsp;seems to be&nbsp;the&nbsp;company\u2019s&nbsp;number one priority.&nbsp;\u201cIf an applicant\u2019s number of Steam games played is 0, we will, in principle, pass them on.&nbsp;We want our&nbsp;colleagues to be playing indie games that are only available on Steam,\u201d he comments. This&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;come as a huge surprise,&nbsp;given&nbsp;Pocketpair\u2019s&nbsp;roots as a small indie on Steam, as well as&nbsp;its&nbsp;subsequent&nbsp;evolution into a sizable developer and publishing label focusing on Steam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the practice is not exactly conventional, especially in terms of standard hiring procedures among Japanese developers.\u00a0When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/interviews\/20240123-25950\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we interviewed Mizobe<\/a>\u00a0at the dawn of\u00a0Palworld\u2019s\u00a0massively popular launch, he told us that\u00a0he\u00a0and his small\u00a0team\u00a0arrived at the game\u2019s design based on thorough experience playing\u00a0other\u00a0acclaimed titles in the same or similar genres \u2013\u00a0like Terraria, The Forest, Sons of the Forest, Conan Exiles, ARK: Survival Evolved, Minecraft,\u00a0Valheim, Raft,\u00a0Rust,\u00a0Astroneer,\u00a0Scrap Mechanic and\u00a0Sunkenland.\u00a0Seeing how well this approach worked out, it makes sense that\u00a0Pocketpair\u00a0wants its game designers to have\u00a0varied (and\u00a0substanial) Steam libraries.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1401\" height=\"790\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1401px) 100vw, 1401px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260123-56087-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260123-56087-001.jpg 1401w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260123-56087-001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260123-56087-001-768x433.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mizobe\u2019s attitude\u00a0towards new hires\u00a0reminds me of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20230630-19878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past remarks by\u00a0CyberConnect2\u2019s\u00a0CEO Matsuyama Hiroshi<\/a>. While Matsuyama got some\u00a0flack\u00a0at the time for wording things\u00a0a bit\u00a0harshly (and focusing on the\u00a0\u201cowning every console out there\u201d side of things), the\u00a0idea that high and varied gaming input should be a pre-requisite for aspiring\u00a0game developers\u00a0seems to come from a similar way of thinking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of Pocketpair, the developer is currently ramping up for <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1623730\/Palworld\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palworld&#8217;s <\/a>much-awaited full release, which is planned to happen in 2026.
