{"id":56016,"date":"2026-01-22T22:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/?p=56016"},"modified":"2026-01-23T10:06:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T01:06:03","slug":"i-had-to-beg-my-ex-wife-former-capcom-producer-yoshiki-okamoto-on-overcoming-10-7-million-debt-and-producing-one-of-the-highest-grossing-mobile-games-of-al","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/i-had-to-beg-my-ex-wife-former-capcom-producer-yoshiki-okamoto-on-overcoming-10-7-million-debt-and-producing-one-of-the-highest-grossing-mobile-games-of-al\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cI had to beg my ex-wife.\u201d Former Capcom producer Yoshiki\u00a0Okamoto on\u00a0overcoming $10.7\u00a0million\u00a0debt and producing one of the\u00a0highest-grossing mobile games of all time\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Former Konami and&nbsp;Capcom veteran&nbsp;<strong>Yoshiki Okamoto<\/strong>, known for producing Street Fighter 2&nbsp;and&nbsp;co-producing&nbsp;Resident Evil&nbsp;1,&nbsp;recently&nbsp;shared some details&nbsp;about his&nbsp;career following his&nbsp;departure from&nbsp;Capcom&nbsp;in 2003.&nbsp;In an interview with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.denfaminicogamer.jp\/interview\/260121h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denfaminicogamer<\/a>, Okamoto&nbsp;opened up&nbsp;about&nbsp;how he&nbsp;recovered from&nbsp;a debt of 1.7 billion yen (over&nbsp;$10.7 million&nbsp;USD)&nbsp;and&nbsp;went on to create&nbsp;Monster Strike, a&nbsp;co-op&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;RPG&nbsp;that became the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/monster-strike-revenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest-grossing mobile app of all time in 2019<\/a>, and continues to top charts&nbsp;over 10 years later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After&nbsp;his&nbsp;independent&nbsp;development&nbsp;company Game Republic&nbsp;collapsed&nbsp;due to a lack of major hits and publishing deals falling through, Okamoto had to let go of&nbsp;300 employees, and&nbsp;his position made it&nbsp;very hard&nbsp;to recover. \u201cAt the time, I was carrying 1.7 billion yen in debt to the bank,\u201d he recalls. \u201cEven if I wanted to do something new, I&nbsp;couldn\u2019t&nbsp;do it&nbsp;on my own. No one&nbsp;was going to approach a creator who bankrupted a company and&nbsp;offer them a job&nbsp;(laughs).\u201d&nbsp;As banks&nbsp;wouldn\u2019t&nbsp;lend to&nbsp;him, and game companies&nbsp;wouldn\u2019t&nbsp;commission any work from him, Okamoto was practically cut off from the industry&nbsp;at this point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1055\" height=\"700\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1055px) 100vw, 1055px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-header-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-header-1.jpg 1055w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-header-1-380x252.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-header-1-768x510.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dxg.jp\/en\/creator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deluxe Games<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This left him with no other&nbsp;options&nbsp;but to&nbsp;turn to his ex-wife.&nbsp;\u201cI went&nbsp;and&nbsp;bowed my head to her.&nbsp;She was&nbsp;literally&nbsp;the&nbsp;only person I could turn to,\u201d&nbsp;he comments.&nbsp;Back then, Okamoto believed mobile games were on the verge of becoming the next&nbsp;big thing&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;industry, and&nbsp;asked his ex-wife to&nbsp;help him&nbsp;set up a mobile game company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Okamoto, she&nbsp;proceeded&nbsp;to call him a \u201cuseless husband,\u201d but&nbsp;was impressed with his investment proposal&nbsp;nonetheless,&nbsp;and agreed&nbsp;to&nbsp;provide capital for two&nbsp;small&nbsp;companies, called 394 and 395&nbsp;respectively&nbsp;(with the latter soon being renamed to Deluxe Games). Okamoto was simply an employee, while his&nbsp;ex-wife and children were&nbsp;the&nbsp;de-facto&nbsp;owners and major shareholders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>394&nbsp;handled contract work for&nbsp;Mixi&nbsp;(the company that would later publish Monster Strike)&nbsp;and other clients and was only marginally profitable, while&nbsp;Deluxe Games&nbsp;basically&nbsp;had&nbsp;no steady revenue at first. Matters became more difficult when 394 downsized, with&nbsp;Okamoto&nbsp;himself being laid off.&nbsp;\u201cThey&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;show any mercy&nbsp;like,&nbsp;\u2018He\u2019s&nbsp;the owner\u2019s ex-husband, so let him stay\u2019&nbsp;(laughs).&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before that happened, however,&nbsp;Okamoto&nbsp;had already pitched a game concept to&nbsp;Mixi.&nbsp;With&nbsp;a small team of former colleagues at Deluxe Games, he continued developing the idea&nbsp;which eventually became Monster Strike.&nbsp;Okamoto says he was extremely confident in the game even early on,&nbsp;so much&nbsp;so that&nbsp;the&nbsp;rest of his co-workers&nbsp;were&nbsp;put off.&nbsp;The basis for his confidence was his belief that&nbsp;widespread&nbsp;smartphone adoption and network connectivity had created the perfect conditions for large-scale hits in the genre.&nbsp;Unlike full price games which would require you to first fork out money for a console specifically to play games, mobile games were much easier to take up, since at that point, owning a smartphone had already become a given.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using&nbsp;Capcom\u2019s&nbsp;Monster Hunter&nbsp;series&nbsp;as a reference, he designed&nbsp;Monster Strike in a way that would&nbsp;encourage&nbsp;players to get together and play simultaneously, predicting that this&nbsp;too&nbsp;would boost the game\u2019s popularity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1310\" height=\"687\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1310px) 100vw, 1310px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-001-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-001-1.jpg 1310w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-001-1-380x199.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20260122-56016-001-1-768x403.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While it suffered from some server issues early on (and criticism of its cheaply outsourced early art), Monster Strike&nbsp;went on to grow rapidly, eventually becoming the&nbsp;no.1 highest-grossing mobile game worldwide. Interestingly, before&nbsp;launch, Okamoto predicted it would be&nbsp;ranked&nbsp;no.2 globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite the success, Okamoto\u00a0says he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0assume a management role at Deluxe Games, as\u00a0he was not a shareholder and had no authority to do so. For\u00a0about\u00a0two years after Monster Strike launched, his monthly salary remained between\u00a0$940 and $1,890.
