Recently, Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno sat down with <a href=\"https:\/\/forbesjapan.com\/articles\/detail\/87349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes Japan<\/a> to talk about the changes this has brought to the industry as it further expands into the overseas market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked how these changes are impacting the way Japanese content is made and distributed, Anno remarked that anime and film studios haven\u2019t made any \u201cconscious\u201d changes in the past years, even though the environment itself has slightly changed. \u201cI personally never made anything with the overseas audience in mind. I can only make domestic stuff. Production companies are quick to say <em>Think about the overseas market, <\/em>but personally, that\u2019s not my goal,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy stance is simply \u2013 it first needs to be a work that will be well received and found interesting in Japan, but if by any chance people overseas also found it interesting, I\u2019d be grateful for that.\u201d Anno mentions that working on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, he \u201cwasn\u2019t considering the overseas market at all.\u201d Apparently, he decided to produce the film independently because it meant no one else could interfere, and he was ready to take full responsibility for it regardless of how well it performed financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1420\" height=\"799\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1420px) 100vw, 1420px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000001.jpg\" alt=\" Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time still.\" class=\"wp-image-55403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000001.jpg 1420w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000001-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000001-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anno explains that making a film for a non-Japanese audience comes with some considerable difficulties, especially the language barrier. \u201cWorks that are made through a Japanese thought process can only be understood in Japanese. Film has both visual and sound elements, so compared to other forms of storytelling, the language barrier is not that . However, lines in the script are still in Japanese, and the drama is achieved through the thoughts and feelings the characters experience in Japanese.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Evangelion director remarks that such works can be well received overseas as well, given that the audience understands the intentions and nuances of the narrative expressed in Japanese. However, he also says that as a creator, he can\u2019t accommodate his work to the audience. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but the audience will have to be the one to adapt,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1155\" height=\"614\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1155px) 100vw, 1155px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000002.jpg\" alt=\"The Boy and The Heron still.\" class=\"wp-image-55404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000002.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000002-380x202.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251224-554000002-768x408.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to video games, which are interactive media, \u201cfilm is a one-way road,\u201d Anno explains. Even if the audience complains, that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that the complains are reaching the creators \u2013 film isn\u2019t a medium that accommodates its contents for the viewer. \u201cThat\u2019s why the audience has to trust the creators in what is interesting, and that\u2019s why I think it\u2019s completely fine to keep production domestic,\u201d he says. \u201cEven Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki stick to domestic production, and I\u2019m sure that they don\u2019t even think about the overseas market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Anno suggests, overseas promotion can come later, and that\u2019s not something creators should be concerned about. \u201cWe should let the business people turn our works into products and sell them, that\u2019s the best course of action,\u201d he says.
