Kennedy. Following the announcement, AUTOMATON Japan had the opportunity to participate in a joint interview with Requiem\u2019s director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa. How will it&nbsp;work?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Koshi Nakanishi (hereafter Nakanishi):<\/strong>\u00a0<br>Requiem has just one, unified story. As the plot advances, you switch between Leon\u2019s sections and Grace\u2019s sections. There are even some scenes where they meet. Grace is \u201cthe biggest scaredy-cat in Resident Evil history,\u201d while Leon is a seasoned veteran, so seeing how those personalities interact is part of the fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014For newcomers to the series, how would you describe Leon\u2019s appeal?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Masato Kumazawa (hereafter Kumazawa):<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>You don\u2019t need to know the past games to understand the story this time around. The only thing you need to know is that he was involved in the Raccoon City incident. We want players to focus on how he confronts things now that he\u2019s older, and how he chooses to deal with the events around him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1061\" height=\"597\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1061px) 100vw, 1061px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-003.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54951\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-003.webp 1061w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-003-380x214.webp 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-003-768x432.webp 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>One thing\u2019s for sure, Leon isn\u2019t just handsome, he\u2019s cool personality-wise too. He\u2019s the type who doesn\u2019t hesitate to sacrifice himself to save others, but he\u2019s not arrogant about it, and he has a passionate inner self. I hope you\u2019ll also look forward to the dry wit and subtle sarcasm that only an older guy can bring.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The battle this time will probably push Leon to his limits more than ever before, and this is a crucial part of the experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014How did you approach designing Leon in this game?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Although he\u2019s a character who carries a lot on his shoulders, we took a lot of care in refining him to be an \u201cikeoji\u201d (a cool\/attractive older guy). The reactions to the trailer on that front have made us happy (laughs).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kumazawa:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>There are plenty of Leon fans inside the company too, after all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>The designers worked really hard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, this is Leon\u2019s first return to Raccoon City since&nbsp;Resident Evil 2, so seeing how he responds to the \u201cplace where it all began\u201d now that he\u2019s older is another major point of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014With two protagonists, how is the overall structure divided?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>In terms of gameplay, Grace and Leon\u2019s playable sections are almost equally split. The structure is similar to&nbsp;Resident Evil Revelations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"864\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-002-1-1536x864-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-002-1-1536x864-1.webp 1536w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-002-1-1536x864-1-380x214.webp 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/biohazard-requiem-interview-20251212-370945-002-1-1536x864-1-768x432.webp 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve said before that Leon isn\u2019t well suited to horror. Since quiet sections where you cower before monsters don\u2019t fit him, his chapters focus on intense, adrenaline-pumping action. Grace\u2019s sections, on the other hand, are the scarier ones. We\u2019re really emphasizing the difference in their experiences this time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s almost like having two games with completely different types of tension mixed together. Early on, we worried players might not be able to keep up, but now we feel that the contrast gives the game a unique rhythm, like jumping into a cold bath after sitting in a hot sauna (laughs). It was important to combine the slow and fast segments well, and Grace and Leon turned out to be the best combination for that. Leon also has lots of new actions, giving you a strong sense of release compared to Grace\u2019s sequences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e--xSwUTQ2U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">past comments<\/a>, you mentioned that you originally considered Leon as the sole protagonist but chose Grace to heighten the horror factor. Was Grace added later in development?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>That was before the project solidified. Once&nbsp;development began in earnest, we were already committed to having two protagonists&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014Past titles like&nbsp;Resident Evil 7&nbsp;drew feedback for being \u201ctoo scary.\u201d Was Grace included specifically to strengthen the horror?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Actually, it\u2019s the opposite. If the whole game were Grace, it would be extremely scary. In this sense, Leon\u2019s sections work to release the tension. You feel safe during Leon\u2019s chapters, and then scared again during Grace\u2019s. It\u2019s a consciously designed horror structure. And after an action segment, the horror feels even more terrifying. I think it\u2019s a combined experience only possible by merging two completely different styles of gameplay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014In the trailer, Leon uses a chainsaw. Does he have other unique actions?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nakanishi:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Grace\u2019s gameplay is based on&nbsp;Resident Evil 2, whereas Leon\u2019s gameplay includes martial arts and melee moves, based on&nbsp;Resident Evil 4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first new game with Leon as a main protagonist since&nbsp;Resident Evil 6, and he\u2019s older and more experienced now. A major development theme for us was: \u201cWhat would Leon be like in 2026?\u201d Even though he keeps fighting to save people, &nbsp;bioterror never goes away, so what state of mind has he reached now? What can he do with his seasoned combat skills? With those concepts in mind, we added new elements on top of a&nbsp;Resident Evil 4-style foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014Leon drives a Porsche. How did that happen?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kumazawa:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>We were looking for a car that fit Leon, and thankfully, Porsche kindly agreed, which led to a full collaboration. We made it his personal car, a Cayenne Turbo GT custom-built to suit the game\u2019s world. It\u2019s a one-of-a-kind car.
