Amidst the rapid advancements of generative AI<\/strong> <\/strong>tools, and the Internet (and people\u2019s portfolios) becoming flooded with AI-generated images, a Japanese mid-sized game company is asking aspiring candidates to draw for them on the spot. This follows several cases of fraud, where applicants attempted to pass off generative AI art as their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When interviewed by Japanese media outlet Daily Shincho<\/a>, an anonymous chief graphic designer known under the alias \u201cB\u201d revealed that some of these applicants were hired, only for the company to find them guilty of using generative AI due to them being unable to make significant contributions to the team with their current skills. To prevent similar cases from occurring, the company now tasks applicants with drawing something live in front of them to verify their skills. While this guarantees the authenticity of the applicant\u2019s work, the process is extremely time-consuming for all the parties involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s a huge hassle for recruiters, and it feels like we’re going backwards, but I hear several other companies are doing the same.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the company\u2019s strict screening process, \u201cB\u201d is beginning to hear talks from upper management suggesting they hire generative AI experts or use it themselves. While \u201cB\u201d\u2019s integral role as an illustrator and character designer allows them a voice in the matter, they feel like their position within the company is gradually weakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I also use generative AI as a supplementary tool on the job. But I strongly believe that only human creators can produce compelling characters and graphics from scratch. That’s precisely why I’m telling upper management that we should hire talented individuals. Yet the company is steering toward promoting generative AI. I’m anxious about how much they truly understand my perspective.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
