To find out more about the long-awaited 3D fighter, AUTOMATON interviewed producer Riichiro Yamada. I joined SEGA in 1999 as a game designer, and over the years I\u2019ve been involved in all sorts of projects, from console titles to mobile games. At one point, I actually left SEGA and worked on game development at Warner Bros. Entertainment, but I returned to the company in 2023. I\u2019m what you\u2019d call a boomerang employee (laughs).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After I came back to SEGA, the idea for a new Virtua Fighter started taking shape, and I\u2019ve been involved in the project since its inception.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014How did the New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project come to be?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Many players have long wanted to see Virtua Fighter revived and hoped something would be done about it. Since arcades have shrunk as a market for fighting games, we decided to focus our efforts on the console market instead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, within SEGA, the Virtua Fighter team was integrated into RGG Studio, which prompted discussions about properly revisiting older IPs. Before long, people started saying, \u201cLet\u2019s make Virtua Fighter,\u201d and I was assigned to oversee the project as producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1298\" height=\"864\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1298px) 100vw, 1298px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-002.jpeg\" alt=\"Riichiro Yamada\" class=\"wp-image-54458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-002.jpeg 1298w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-002-380x253.jpeg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-002-768x511.jpeg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014When the project was first launched, did you have a shared goal or vision within the team?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Of course, our goal is to make a game worthy of being nominated for Game of the Year. Like the very first Virtua Fighter, we want a title that doesn\u2019t just sit within the \u201cfighting game\u201d mold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fighting game genre tends to be seen as a special, niche category. But Virtua Fighter actually isn\u2019t like that; it\u2019s easy for anyone to pick up and play, and I think that\u2019s one of its strengths.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a game isn\u2019t something anyone can enjoy, it won\u2019t reach the level of recognition needed to even be considered for GOTY. This is the meaning behind our target of \u201cmaking New VIRTUA FIGHTER a GOTY-worthy game.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014You\u2019ve already revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KkGmeofGSw0?si=OLdh0Jd0f7M3yIpR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some battle footage<\/a>, including new systems and mechanics. What kinds of new gameplay were you aiming for with these additions?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1195\" height=\"673\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1195px) 100vw, 1195px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-007-1536x864-1.jpg\" alt=\"New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project Flowguard\" class=\"wp-image-54460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-007-1536x864-1.jpg 1195w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-007-1536x864-1-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-007-1536x864-1-768x433.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>In an ongoing series, it\u2019s important to bring in new things, but also to strip things down from time to time. Personally, I think most fighting games share broadly similar rules, so I wanted to introduce a slightly \u201cdifferent way to play\u201d within that framework.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consistent, core rules of fighting games are fun on their own, but I wanted to add something new, so we introduced the Uprising* rule set. Even if what you do during a match doesn\u2019t change fundamentally, switching up the rules allows it to evolve into a different kind of gameplay. The base fighting-game rules are already fun, that\u2019s a given for us, but since this is a new entry, we want to experiment with various ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(*Uprising: for now, all we know is that it\u2019s a new battle rule built around \u201cdynamic momentum-shifting opportunities,\u201d offering a distinctly different experience from Standard rules)<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1197\" height=\"671\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1197px) 100vw, 1197px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0010-1536x864-1.jpg\" alt=\"New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project Battle rules\" class=\"wp-image-54461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0010-1536x864-1.jpg 1197w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0010-1536x864-1-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0010-1536x864-1-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014The series has made bold gameplay system changes before too, like the throw tech changes in VF5 or the introduction of a bound system. Some of these have received mixed reactions, but are you prepared for similar reactions this time?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Of course. We believe the new features and system changes from VF4 to VF5 \u2013 good or bad \u2013 represent one coherent, completed evolution. Above all, the fact that people still play it today is proof of its high level of completion, and proof that the path of evolution we took wasn&#8217;t a mistake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if we just keep piling more on top, we\u2019ll end up with a game that\u2019s overly complex. So, with New VIRTUA FIGHTER, we need to experiment by cutting away some of the things we\u2019ve built up, as well as bringing in new features.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make these decisions, we\u2019ll keep testing various ideas, but I trust Takeda (VF series battle director Yosuke Takeda) to safeguard the truly important parts (laughs). As someone who\u2019s been making VF forever, he understands this best. Similarly, our programmers and motion designers also know very well what parts of a fighting game absolutely must not be touched. It&#8217;s about preserving those core elements while incorporating new ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, new elements will be tested thoroughly and only added if they\u2019re entertaining, but we know some people will inevitably still feel that things were better before. Still, I think it\u2019s important to make something even people who\u2019ve never played VF before will want to try, so we&#8217;re eager to take on new and fun challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014Is that the \u201cNew\u201d in New VIRTUA FIGHTER?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>The final title isn\u2019t confirmed yet (laughs), but yes, the \u201cNew\u201d reflects that intent. How did you balance offering accessibility for newcomers vs providing depth for core players?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>We prioritized broadening the game\u2019s appeal to casual players. That said, we\u2019re not simply \u201cmaking things easy\u201d and neglecting core players. No matter what, a certain degree of challenging aspects and depth must remain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1518\" height=\"852\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1518px) 100vw, 1518px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0011-1536x864-1.jpg\" alt=\"New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project Stunner and Stun Combo\" class=\"wp-image-54463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0011-1536x864-1.jpg 1518w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0011-1536x864-1-380x213.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-0011-1536x864-1-768x431.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014To begin with, VF is known for having a huge number of motions and a high degree of complexity.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>That\u2019s right. As long as that complexity is preserved, I think we can keep experimenting with various approaches to broaden the game&#8217;s appeal. That\u2019s why we&#8217;re keeping foot positioning, for example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the perspective of fighting-game players, it\u2019s one of those confusing elements that just adds more stuff to memorize. But for people unfamiliar with fighters, it\u2019s a \u201cWow, they even care about those kinds of details? That\u2019s awesome\u201d kind of element. The fact that stance affects the number of combos to learn really only matters to players at the top level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So even though it\u2019s technically a complex mechanic, it doesn\u2019t necessarily narrow the game\u2019s entry point as much as you might think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During playtests, we ask people with zero VF experience about such things, and they respond with \u201cThat looks fun,\u201d or \u201cI didn\u2019t know it had things like that.\u201d Meanwhile, long-time fans express concern or give feedback, but the \u201cbeginner\u201d imagined by veteran players is often nowhere near an actual beginner. We realized that many of the things veterans assume beginners worry about are things beginners aren\u2019t even thinking about. It reminded us that we need to look at things from a more neutral perspective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"864\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-008-1536x864-1.jpg\" alt=\"New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project \" class=\"wp-image-54464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-008-1536x864-1.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-008-1536x864-1-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/new-virtua-fighter-20251201-369097-008-1536x864-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014True, an average player wouldn\u2019t even notice their stance changed (laughs).<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>But changing stances is fun, isn\u2019t it? (laughs). When a game gives you tools, you naturally want to use them. Having different moves based on stances is a cool feature, but we need to prevent it from becoming overly complicated or annoying. Raising the bar too high and making the game frustrating is the last thing we want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014Has New VIRTUA FIGHTER drawn inspiration from recent fighting games like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>First, I believe it&#8217;s crucial for fighting games not to be confined by established concepts. The concept of \u201cfighting games\u201d varies by country, and I think the mindset of it being a specific, defined genre can lead to narrow thinking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, we\u2019re focusing on making a game that\u2019s just fun. I believe what\u2019s important is to keep holding on to that principle. It often feels more like a \u201ckung-fu simulator\u201d than a typical fighting game. Is that philosophy still alive?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Yes, I believe the reason why players are attracted to Virtua Fighter is because it\u2019s part simulator, and because it doesn\u2019t try to imitate other fighting games. While we take cues from what has made other titles successful, we want to preserve a strong sense of uniqueness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014Finally, do you have a message for fans of the series waiting for New VIRTUA FIGHTER?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yamada:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>We\u2019re working hard to make this a game that doesn\u2019t stay confined to the \u201cfighting-game\u201d category, something even people who\u2019ve never touched the series before will find fun. We haven\u2019t revealed the full picture yet, but we should be able to show more in the next update.
