This document, titled \u201cNotes for the EVA Theatrical Edit Version,\u201d was written 20 years ago,\u00a0on\u00a0November 20,\u00a02005.<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the statement, Anno explains <em>\u201c<\/em>In the beginning,\u00a0I\u00a0envisioned Rebuild of Evangelion as a\u00a0compilation\u00a0that would feature an\u00a0alternate ending. Episodes 20 and onwards of the anime would be re-edited to account for the new finale.\u00a0The finale\u00a0in the\u00a0very early\u00a0rough plot involves\u00a0a confrontation between Kaworu&#8217;s and Shinji&#8217;s EVAs. This culminates\u00a0in Shinji forgiving\u00a0Kaworu\u00a0after\u00a0the latter\u00a0killed\u00a0Gendo\u00a0Ikari, who had fused with Asuka and\u00a0the\u00a0Adams,\u00a0along with Eva Unit-02.\u00a0After many twists and turns, I never imagined until September 2018 that the finale would be set at Ube-Shinkawa Station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas the theatrical release\u00a0of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time\u00a0ends with\u00a0Shinji Ikari resetting the world\u00a0and\u00a0Kaworu\u00a0dying, the earliest version of the\u00a0finale had\u00a0Gendo\u00a0Ikari, Shinji\u2019s father,\u00a0assimilate with Asuka and the Adams inside Evangelion Unit-02.\u00a0Gendo\u2019s\u00a0actions lead\u00a0Kaworu\u00a0Nagisa\u00a0to kill him, which\u00a0ultimately leads\u00a0to a confrontation\u00a0between\u00a0Shinji\u00a0and\u00a0Kaworu\u00a0in their respective EVAs. The original ending sees Shinji forgiving\u00a0Kaworu.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1561\" height=\"861\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1561px) 100vw, 1561px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251121-54208-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251121-54208-001.jpg 1561w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251121-54208-001-380x210.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251121-54208-001-768x424.jpg 768w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251121-54208-001-1536x847.jpg 1536w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The early ending concept\u00a0features a different\u00a0take on\u00a0the franchise\u2019s dark tone\u00a0\u2013 with a stronger focus on the relationship between Shinji and\u00a0Kaworu\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0feature the unexpected reset\u00a0from the theatrical release.\u00a0While reception for\u00a0Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 was positive, there are fans who were divided on how the\u00a0ending\u00a0was handled and the resolution of some plot lines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reactions to the revelation by Anno include fans expressing their desire to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Morolian\/status\/1991508502502838282?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">see the original concept be brought to life<\/a>. Some\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0believe how close they were to seeing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CRagiclover\/status\/1991541498576544137?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kaworu-Shinji EVA fight<\/a>\u00a0on the big screen.
