While this is a well-known fact, Ueda recently gave some extra insights into the game\u2019s conception, including the title that inspired him to (attempt to) make an online co-op game in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.denfaminicogamer.jp\/interview\/251027y#i-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denfaminicogamer<\/a> marking Shadow of the Colossus\u2019 20th anniversary, Ueda says that back in the day, he found himself playing a lot of DICE\u2019s multiplayer FPS Battlefield 1942. Impressed by the fact that each of the 64 characters in a match had a human player behind it, he thought to himself, &#8220;This is the future of gaming.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NICO [Shadow Of The Colossus Beta] Proto Tech Demo PS2\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LeBpRiWGdWg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NICO (an abbreviation of Next ICO) was a pilot movie included in the pre-order bonus disc for Shadow of the Colossus. In it, several player-controlled characters on horseback can be seen chasing a colossus before mounting and attacking its weak point. This concept of cooperative monster hunting is very similar to Capcom\u2019s Monster Hunter (which would subsequently release in 2004). However, Ueda and his team realized that they lacked the technical resources needed to realize their vision, so the idea ended up being scrapped.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ueda recalls how he was drawn to the intensity and live feel of online play, as well as how these feelings gradually faded over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1275\" height=\"712\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1275px) 100vw, 1275px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251028-53393-001.jpg\" alt=\"Battlefield 1942\" class=\"wp-image-53398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251028-53393-001.jpg 1275w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251028-53393-001-380x212.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251028-53393-001-768x429.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I used to enjoy the excitement of competitive play, as I got older, I started seeking a different kind of immersion. That&#8217;s when I began reconsidering the appeal of games you play alone.
