Much of the criticism comes from fans who don\u2019t want to see any kind of political commentary coming from the game\u2019s official channels, especially given the franchise&#8217;s very pronounced military themes and aesthetics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kantai Collection is a free-to-play browser game and multimedia franchise with a 12-year-long history. Published by DMM Games, the game revolves around \u201cfleet girls\u201d \u2013 personified versions of real-life warships from WWII. While most of the characters are representations of battleships, cruisers and submarines belonging to the Imperial Japanese Navy, foreign navies like the Soviet Navy, United States Navy and Nazi Germany\u2019s Kriegsmarine make an appearance too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"711\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251027-53346-header-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251027-53346-header-1.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251027-53346-header-1-380x231.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251027-53346-header-1-768x467.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s based on WWII, Kantai Collection doesn\u2019t pit any of the fleet girls against each other, instead setting the conflict between humanity and mysterious hostile beings referred to as the Abyssal Fleet (explained in canon-adjacent media as either the corrupted souls of sunken fleet girls or an extraterrestrial race).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the game has undoubtedly sparked an admiration for the Imperial Japanese Navy in some people, a good chunk of Kantai Collection\u2019s Japanese playerbase is careful about drawing the line between being just a military history \u201cgeek\u201d (otaku) and being an actual militarist. This could be why C2\u2019s recent post has caused so much dissatisfaction, with several veteran players even announcing their \u201cretirements\u201d from the game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement in question was posted on October 21, after it was announced that conservative Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan&#8217;s first female prime minister.
