It involved fixing \u201cbroken\u201d AI-generated animations for an insultingly cheap price. Payment was per frame and roughly at the rate of adding finishing touches. They&#8217;re completely out of their minds, so I told them never to contact me again and turned them down.<\/em>\u00a0I feel like a bad tendency is showing its face&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Joni understands that hiring an animator can be expensive, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jonchop1\/status\/1978327211288432872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they couldn\u2019t fathom why someone would commission an animator to revise AI-generated work<\/a> for lower-than-standard pay. I want to eradicate the practice of trying to get away with cheap \u201csupervision\u201d and &#8220;corrections.&#8221; The anime industry has already wiped out key animation directors because of this.<\/em>\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning down the commission was also a matter of principle. Joni states that they don\u2019t want to participate in the practice of professionals fixing subpar animations for cheap to reduce the cost of anime production, regardless of whether it comes from AI or humans. This phenomenon has, in their opinion, made key animation directors across the industry snap under overwhelming pressure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They explain that <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jonchop1\/status\/1978496302108307540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many anime studios outsource work to overseas contractors<\/a>. This has led to the industry-wide practice of animation being drawn cheaply and quickly outside of Japan (no matter the quality) before being handed over to Japanese key animation directors. The directors would then be forced to fix the animations under a set, per-episode cost, keeping the budget the same and the costs low. Due to the uneven work-payment balance, several key animation directors who were expected to deliver cheap yet skillful \u201cfixes\u201d ended up resigning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jonchop1\/status\/1978337757131952313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joni tells all animators to be cautious<\/a> when accepting commissions like the one they were offered. They warn others not to casually accept these offers without first confirming that the remuneration is worth their abilities.
