In a recent essay published in Japanese magazine an-an<\/a>, Hideo Kojima reflected on the impact the 1970 Osaka World Expo had on his life and career as a creator. Although he\u2019d only just become a grade schooler at the time, Kojima described the event as a formative experience that shaped his worldview and creativity to the point that his later works, including Metal Gear and Death Stranding, would not have existed without it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he lived near the Expo site, Kojima said he visited the event numerous times. \u201cI experienced up close the \u2018future and harmony of the world,\u2019\u201d he wrote. \u201cGetting to \u2018shake hands\u2019 and \u2018say hello\u2019 to people like Taro Okamoto, Sakyo Komatsu, Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa, Junko Koshino, and Hanae Mori, was a shocking \u2018Close Encounter of the Third Kind\u2019 for me.\u201d Interestingly, Kojima refers to the 1970 Expo as a dividing line between his life\u2019s \u201cpersonal B.C and A.D.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasizes that the Expo\u2019s true greatness was not just in its cutting-edge technology and visions of life in the future, but in its diversity. \u201cIt also showed me the coexistence of different countries, races, religions, customs, and histories. It was the embodiment of \u2018the past and future,\u2019 \u2018the world and harmony\u2019 itself.\u201d Kojima concludes that without it, his \u201cfuturistic mindset and globalism would have never developed, and as a result, Metal Gear and Death Stranding would not have come into being either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, reflecting on this year\u2019s Osaka Expo 2025, Kojima seems disappointed with what he sees as a lack of ambition and futuristic vision compared to 1970\u2019s event. He was even approached by the government\u2019s preparatory committee for ideas, but it seems his proposals were too ambitious for Expo 2025\u2019s budget. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
