According to <strong>Street Fighter 6<\/strong> director Takayuki Nakayama, this decision was made by Capcom\u2019s esports division and not the development team, who seem to have been unaware until the public announcement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It may sound strange, but it&#39;s true. Even the development team was surprised by this announcement\uff08At least Matsumoto and I were shocked at the venue\uff09That said, since this matter occurred within the same\u2026<\/p>&mdash; TAKA-nakayama (@takaNakayama) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/takaNakayama\/status\/1973626143187280262?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 2, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bri4nF\/status\/1973622634844692894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X post<\/a> by professional Street Fighter player Brian &#8220;Brian_F&#8221; Foster (which itself is a response to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/takaNakayama\/status\/1973563712838705238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of Nakayama\u2019s older posts<\/a> about Street Fighter\u2019s development team being separate from the esports division), Nakayama explained that revenue targets and tasks differ between Capcom\u2019s departments, which seems to result in decisions not being exchanged between all parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, Nakayama and producer Shuhei Matsumoto were \u201cshocked\u201d at Capcom\u2019s announcement about the new pay-per-view tickets. The two developers were present at <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/over-50-of-japanese-game-companies-use-ai-in-development-according-to-tokyo-game-show-organizer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tokyo Game Show 2025<\/a> (where the announcement was made), but they were not part of the company\u2019s on-stage showcase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"762\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1350px) 100vw, 1350px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251001-52663-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251001-52663-header.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251001-52663-header-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20251001-52663-header-768x433.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While pay-per-view tickets increase profitability and offset the costs of hosting these large events, they also add a barrier to entry for those who want to enjoy watching fighting games live. People who can&#8217;t afford tickets or have no access to them are effectively barred from experiencing the excitement of finales alongside the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is still hope for those who want to watch these events for free as they happen. According to Nakayama, Capcom is currently conducting an internal discussion (which includes the dev team and esports division) about how to approach Street Fighter tournaments.
