As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikkei.com\/article\/DGXZQOUF251PU0V20C25A9000000\/?n_cid=SNSTW005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Nikkei<\/a>, the research includes insights into how much domestic companies are using AI and generative AI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on responses from 54 Japanese game companies collected between June and July 2025, about 51% use generative AI in game development. The most commonly cited use of AI was in the generation of visual assets and images such as characters, followed by story and text generation; and lastly programming support. Reportedly, 32% of game companies are enlisting the help of AI to develop in-house game engines. The survey sample is made up of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesa.or.jp\/about\/member-list\/index-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CESA\u2019s member companies<\/a>, which range from big players like Capcom and Sega to mid-sized and indie-scale developers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1486\" height=\"783\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1486px) 100vw, 1486px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250926-52389-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250926-52389-005.jpg 1486w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250926-52389-005-380x200.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250926-52389-005-768x405.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">AI background asset examples, image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kantei.go.jp\/jp\/singi\/titeki2\/ai_kentoukai\/gijisidai\/dai4\/siryou1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Level-5<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Several Japanese developers have been open about their use (or plans to use) generative AI. Professor Layton and Yo-Kai Watch developer Level-5 is one such example \u2013 back in 2023, they <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/20231213-24326\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detailed their use of Stable Diffusion<\/a> for upscaling assets, generating reference images for artists and creating parts of in-game backgrounds; as well as the use of Github Copilot for coding assistance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capcom\u2019s technical department <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/game-development\/capcom-is-experimenting-with-generative-ai-to-help-generate-the-hundreds-of-thousands-of-ideas-needed-for-game-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has also been experimenting with generative AI<\/a> models like Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash and Imagen, mostly for the purpose of brainstorming and prototyping background assets needed to fill out in-game environments (like TVs and similar objects). The company\u2019s representatives mentioned that generative AI (such as image, motion and code generation) is being used in game development for internal testing purposes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, there are developers that are hesitant to adopt AI.
