This refers to companies (usually big-name businesses with hundreds of new graduates applying every year) screening out job applicants based on which schools they attended before even considering other factors. As a result, certain companies become (unofficially) known for hiring only people coming from specific universities. Murahashi applied to work for Nintendo in 2015, after completing his master studies, and was caught off guard by how rigorous the testing process was (albeit admitting that he approached the whole thing a bit too lightly).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\">\u201cI\u2019d heard that Nintendo doesn\u2019t use any kind of academic background filter when hiring new graduates. But when I actually took Nintendo\u2019s recruitment exam, the very first web test was extremely difficult, and I remember thinking: Makes sense, no need for a filter when this alone sifts out the candidates.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murahashi is referring to an aptitude test here, which tests candidates on general subjects like mathematics and English. The difficulty level and time limits of Nintendo\u2019s aptitude test seem to have stood out to Murahashi from all the companies he\u2019d applied for \u2013 however, the real surprise (and reason for his ultimate disqualification) was what came after he\u2019d passed this test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1350\" height=\"759\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1350px) 100vw, 1350px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250601-48587-002.jpg\" alt=\"Mario Kart World\" class=\"wp-image-51942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250601-48587-002.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250601-48587-002-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20250601-48587-002-768x432.jpg 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#eaeaea\">\u201cOnce you clear the web test, the next stage is the technical interview, which includes a practical programming exam. And this is not the kind of test where a vague understanding will get you through, you really have to think through the program (algorithm) properly. That, too, was really difficult\u2026 (and also where I failed).\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a more detailed recount of the experience on his <a href=\"https:\/\/log.mkuriki.com\/nintendo-recruitment-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog<\/a>, Murahashi explains that of all the companies he and people he knew applied for, no others tested job candidates with a practical programming exam. The test included five coding problems, ranging from basic to complex, to be solved in C language within a time limit of 30 minutes. Applicants\u2019 screens were watched in real-time by an examiner. With some gaps in memory, Murahashi gives a general idea of what the test looked like:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic integer summation using a for loop\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>FizzBuzz-style problem\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find the nth term of a sequence like the Fibonacci numbers\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(Forgot this one)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find the area of a triangle defined by three points in 3D space\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Murahashi\u2019s posts on X earned a lot attention, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/obakemogura\/status\/1965012427407610176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">response<\/a> from Motoi Okamoto (who <a href=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/news\/at-nintendo-every-developer-is-a-director-if-you-make-excuses-you-get-removed-from-the-team-motoi-okamoto-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worked for Nintendo for 10 years<\/a> before becoming a producer at Konami).
