Final Fantasy XIV<\/strong> has been around for quite a while now<\/a>, initially releasing for PC in 2010 before being recalled due to poor reception and replaced with the current version we know and love for the PlayStation 3 and PC in 2013. The game has since been ported to two console generations. While support for the PS3 version ended with the release of the Stormblood expansion pack, director and producer Naoki Yoshida says he would like to maintain support for the game on as many platforms as possible for the foreseeable future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Feed4Gamers<\/a>, Yoshi-P comments that since his objective is to make Final Fantasy XIV accessible to as many players as possible, there is always a possibility that the game will see a release for a hypothetical PlayStation 6 or future Xbox. Given that current-gen consoles have higher technical specifications compared to hardware that was around when the game first released, the FFXIV team finds it easier to work with them. In this regard, they don’t see new hardware coming out as a negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, Yoshi-P also mentions that not everyone can afford the newer and pricier consoles. He adds that looking from a gamer\u2019s perspective, \u201cthere is no real need to make new hardware, because I think right now people are happy with the Xbox Series X, the PS5, and the Switch 2.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a similar vein, it was not long ago that former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida called the difference between the PS5 and PS5 Pro \u201chard to tell,\u201d calling on Sony to change its way of thinking<\/a> when it comes to future console development if it wants players and developers to remain interested. Hideo Kojima also recently remarked<\/a> about the PS5 not bringing any fundamental changes to game development when compared to its predecessor. In this sense, Yoshi-P’s remark about peoples\u2019 lack of an appetite for new hardware may speak of a wider tendency.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given his stance on the console market, Yoshi-P says that he wants to continue supporting Final Fantasy XIV on as many platforms as possible<\/a>. However, the sheer scale of the game and some of its features may impose limits when it comes to older hardware. Should these limits be reached and support for a console come to an end, Yoshi-P will clearly communicate the dev team’s plans to players.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
