However, the decision to parody a song from one of Japan\u2019s most famous rock bands ended up causing a wave of divided opinions \u2013 which has turned into a conversation about copyright in Japanese media. Specifically, \u201cHunting Soul,\u201d a song by the fictional band HAYASii appearing in the 6<sup>th<\/sup> episode of the anime\u2019s second season, has been said to very closely resemble X JAPAN\u2019s hit track Kurenai (1989).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the name of the fictional band directly parodied Yoshiki\u2019s last name, Hayashi. Following the episode\u2019s airing, Yoshiki\u2019s series of now deleted X posts pointing out that the parody was not communicated to him beforehand started a wave of divided opinions among fans, both domestic and international. I believe we need to take a step back and start approaching manga creation in accordance with global [copyright] standards,\u201d Kito said in his X post. \u201cIt will be necessary to take those steps if we want anime and manga to go global.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/masaki_kito\/status\/1959625200787661229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another one of his posts<\/a> on the same topic, he stated: \u201cIn order for Japanese manga to further expand globally, we need to be wary of different countries\u2019 laws and customs in advance, like Hollywood does it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"363\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500001.jpg\" alt=\"Dandadan key visual.\" class=\"wp-image-51355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500001.jpg 623w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500001-380x221.jpg 380w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest gags introduced in Dandadan is protagonist Okarun\u2019s full name being Ken Takakura \u2013 which is also the name of a famous Japanese actor and singer. The manga does not attempt to shy away from the fact that Okarun\u2019s name and (partly) character are based on the late actor. Kito implied that the gag was incomprehensible to the Western audience, on top of other parodies and homages in Dadadan that could cause potential legal problems in Japan. Furthermore, he suggests that creators should avoid making moves that could potentially be infringing on not just domestic, but worldwide copyright laws, and aim for their works to be more aware of the overseas audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"614\" height=\"313\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" src=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500002.jpg\" alt=\"Dandadan key visual.\" class=\"wp-image-51356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500002.jpg 614w, https:\/\/automaton-media.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/20250825-513500002-380x194.jpg 380w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, many Japanese X users seem to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kohei_w1985\/status\/1959485712463741016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disagree<\/a> with Kito\u2019s posts, calling his reasonings \u201cvague\u201d and the criteria for \u201cworldwide standards\u201d unclear. \u201cThe Dandadan and Yoshiki controversy is just a copyright infringement problem, yet people are trying to bring up \u2018global creative standards\u2019 in order to regulate anime and manga in a way that suits their own interests,\u201d another user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Witchwatch99\/status\/1959451014953676989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commented<\/a>. \u201cIf Dandadan was this big of a problem for Mr. Kito, Gintama would probably be subject to book burning by his standards,\u201d a user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kohei_w1985\/status\/1959593984394969424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joked<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As some have already pointed out, the talking points in the Dandadan discussion seem to have, whether purposely or unintentionally, been muddled up a bit. While copyright is a matter of law and simply must be considered if you want to avoid a lawsuit when localizing your work for other regions (like how Jojo\u2019s Bizarre Adventure changes Stand names like \u201cKing Crimson\u201d to \u201cEmperor Crimson\u201d in its English localization), using cultural references unknown to audiences outside of Japan is a matter of creative choice and appears unrelated to legal issues.
